Vassar vs. Brown

I'm having quite a miserable time with this decision...the major problem being that they seem SO similar.

Anyone else in this position care to offer any insight?

Wow! Exactly same position here, same schools and everything. Have you visited recently? That's what is helping me make up my mind. Also make a list of all the things you are looking for in a school. Make up a system (I tend to use checks with plusses and minuses) to grade each school, and then see which one gets an overall better score.

Are you leaning in one direction or the other right now? I am definitely leaning towards one but I'm letting it simmer for a few days.

i went to adoch, and i'm visiting vassar again on sunday

now that my finaid packages have evened out, i think i am also leaving towards one but i'm also gonna give it some time.

vassar was always my top and brown was just sort of like an "oh it'd be fun to go there even though i'll never get in" and now i have no idea what to do. humph.

After overnights at both schools, and spending yesterday at ADOCH, I was surprised to find that Brown is coming out ahead, even though before acceptances came out, I was pretty sure I would pick Vassar. My main reasons are campus and location. For everything I love about Vassar, I feel like the campus might be a little small, and the town as well. I was also less enthusiastic about the food. But that's just me. No matter which you choose, you'll be at a great school, and I know the same thing is true for me.

Good luck deciding. You really can't go wrong!

Your intended majors might help you decide. What do you plan to study? But yes, Brown wins the town award by an overwhelming
amount. The school food is not that celebrated, so I wouldn't award a point there. Of course at Brown, you have endless food possibilties right on Thayer Street. Many majors at Brown are wonderful --a few are not that strong and are actually better at Vassar, film, for instance.

Also keep in mind, Brown has many LARGE classes at the intro level, and many smaller classes at the intro level are taught by TA's. When profs teach the large lecture classes, the smaller discussion groups and labs are always TA-led.

i'm looking to do drama

both dept's seem good...but very different. i already know vassar's is great but i'm not sure about brown's 100% yet.

You have to check out the Brown department carefully. I do not know about that one at Brown although --you are right-- the Vassar program is well-known. I would bet it is better but you need to check, I could be wrong.

My older son goes to Brown and the younger is going to Vassar in the Fall. I love both schools but they are not the same in every aspect, obviously.

Brown is a wonderful place, a truly spectacular place, but it has some gaps in the curriculum and serious weaknesses. It has some very large classes. It uses TAs. All this varies by subject and department.

My older son wanted to switch into a film double major, but he hates the film department (called modern culture and media) at Brown. The offerings are very weak and/or too esoteric, and he is going to have to study film away from Brown. On the other hand, the math department, the creative writing program, these Brown programs are fantastic

You must investigate. Do not assume that because a school is an Ivy it will meet your specific needs. Of course as a place to BE, to meet friends, to have the college experience, Brown is wonderful.

thank you for all of your help! i really appreciate it!
