Very Large High Schools

kara is from Plano. I can bet cash on this :)

whoops** we only have 101 seniors

There are three schools in my district. There's also one school about a mile and a half away not in my district. My school has about 3000 kids, with 600 in the senior class.

It must be because of the low socioeconomic class, but the larger the class, the harder it is to unite and improve, I think. Of course, class sizes are large, with many maxing out at 36 per classroom and because the district is horribly underfunded with an administration that's anti-student, classes and extracirriculars are constantly cut each year.

there are 4 high schools in my town. the high school i attend has two campuses (a main one, and a freshman campus). There are probably 3500 at the main campus, and 1200 at the freshman campus, putting my school alone at about 5000 students (keep in mind that there are three other schools of similar size in my town). there are about 1000 seniors in the graduating class.

My school is about 2500. Its a pretty good size. On average we field usually about 23 AP course offerings. Which is plenty, not to mention directed study options. A lot of the regular electives are terrible though with poor faculty. Upper level classes definitely have the best teachers.

My school has 2600-2700 students...but it works out.

Freshmen and sophomore years just flat BLOW. Classes are crammed and not much is learned. However the upperclassmen get great treatment, with smaller AP classes and awesome teachers. We have lots of big school luxeries(our own stadium across street, lots of high tech equipment) but also with the atmosphere of a small school in the more advanced classes.

My school has about 3200 students, and though it is a MEGA-school, I still love it.

Pros: SOOO MANY PEOPLE- you meet a ton of new people every day, and you get to make new friendships all the time

SO MANY ELECTIVES- we have like at least 70 different elective classes because we have a lot of students wanting them, so we have so much to choose from.

SO MANY APs- ~ 15 by the count of my head

A huge amount of extracurrics- We have clubs for EVERYTHING, and there's always someone wanting to make a new club for a new topic, and lots of people join. A lot of people in my school love participating in extracurrics. I am a huge newspaper and drama junkie.

LOTS of sports team: We have liek 32 teams- 8 JV. A lot of them are division champs coz we have a lot of people/athletes to select from.

Diversity is HUGE. We have so many different people in the school- it's like an actual microcosm of society in the little campus.

CONS: Class sizes for Intro-type classes are like around 34- 50 !

It's hard to keep in touch with everyone, because sometimes you don't see them at all because there's a lot of people in the school going back and forth between classes.

It can be intimidating seeing ~3000 ppl running through the halls.

Long waits at bathrooms between periods...

my school is pretty big too. 2000+ people i guess?? i know that the cons of having such a large high school are waiting in long lines for stuff, and definitely class size. this year my school had to kick out 100+ students for falsifying their addresses and causing overcrowding. large class sizes+ bad teachers are definitely not the greatest combination. i remember last year in biology, my teacher was not exactly the best at her job (she mentioned at the beginning of the year that she didnt even like her job..) and we had a HUGE class. and this year in chem honors we have about 40 kids. our school makes an effort to keep the literature and english classes small for purposes of better lit discussions, etc, but i want the problem to be targeted in the science classes, too.

"CONS: Class sizes for Intro-type classes are like around 34- 50 !"

***FFFFFFFFFff omg 50 kids is like crazy man...thats like a college campus XD

On one hand I would definately love my school with 4000 kids. You can meet new people every day, everyone doesn't know everyone, so gossip doesn't go around so much, you can date one girl and its less likely to talk to another girl your dating, etc. It would feel more like the real world.

On the other hand, the idea of less opportunity and bigger competition to get into the top ten, leadership positions in clubs and all that is definately more challenging.

Well, A-san, i go to a huge school (around 5000), and a lot of people in my grade know a lot of other people. And there is still a ton of gossip, but maybe not to the extent of a small school...

My old school had 12-15 hundred kids in the school with 300-360 in each class my class was the largest class to enter my ms pretty much in ever and we almost were the highest class entering freshman year in the hs but freshman class came into the hs this year even tho i decided to go to another hs this year my friend says the freshman crouds up the hallways and everything is just so overcrowded i think the freshman class has close to 400 in the grade and we dont have a huge HS we actually have a larger middle school then the hs(it used to b the hs but they decided to make it the ms and build a new hs 50-60 years ago) and my school south side used to be already enough crouded in the hallways( classrooms were ok 20-25 kids in a class just a lot of teachers and a lot of classes so kids could get attention)

My high school has about 250 students, and 50 of them are in my grade. My academic classes range from 3 students (IB French A1 HL) to 12 (IB English A1 HL). My journalism elective (with juniors and seniors combined) has 40, but we're split between two computer labs because everyone works independently--it's more like a club than an actual class.

Some of your high schools are almost 20 times the size of mine... I can't even imagine what that would be like.

our school has well over 3000 kids, and its not a big deal at all. we dont feel any overcrowding or anything, but then again, our school is really big. here in houston, there's lots of space, so our school can be built on lots of space. i guess i'm just used to it.

Our school is probably the biggest -- and most overcrowded -- in the area; it was built about three or so years ago ('05 was the first graduating class, but our class, '07, will be the first graduating class to have spent all 4 years on campus). My class is at around 550 students, the seniors are about the same, the sophomores have an even bigger class, and the freshmen have an even bigger class -- so that brings the total to 2000+. We're currently in the process of building yet another building.

But our facilities are pretty nice (we were dubbed the "High-tech" high school back in the day when every student got a free laptop to use for the year .. this was discontinued, unfortunately, right before my freshman year due to the abuse the laptops got). Our school is totally packed, and our selection of classes really isn't that great, but I blame that on the fact that our school is relatively new.

my school aint mega...it's 1500, but somehow we still have over 50 electives and 25 Ap classes to choose from...
we have serious problems with hallway space and bathrooms as well. our school was built for 1200, and we closed open enrollment this year.

my school has 26-2800 kids, and i love it. it was a bit intimidating at first, but there's so much to do, and i feel like i know a lot of people already (granted, not as many freshmen and juniors, but thats the way it goes).

im applying to colleges with 1300 kids to 30,000, so im not sure where i'll be next year...or even what i want

we have about 2000-2500 students (our school was built as a bomb shelter during Vietnam for 1400 people)...our senior class has about 400...and my senior Advanced Intro Analysis class has about 50 students in it while my AP classes have about 10 students...we also have several large auditorium classrooms...I don't know WHY people falsify addresses and decide to come here (who the hell would CHOOSE to come here)...we have SO many students from New Orleans due to Katrina too...

I live in a ISD where the system's a bit messed up. Instead of four year high schools, we have five schools for 9th and 10th and three for 11th and 12th. The "Senior Highs" are massive by themselves, ~1300 per grade, for a total of about 2500 per senior, meaning if it were a more traditional system there would be 5000 (0_0!) people at each school.
Our 9/10ths are pretty big too, ~800 per grade.

I like the big schools though. Because our district is pretty well off, there is plenty of room and resources for the number of kids, and the schools are able to offer a lot more classes.

Edit: should have read the entire thread first. Kara already posted on our district. Yay Plano!

My school had around 3000 people, and it just seems to get bigger every year... Now we have portable buildings.. and.. more portable buildings... Bad things are going to happen when I get to senior year next year and want to ask councellor for recs.. yeah....
