Very nervous-chance me?

So application season is coming around and now it's my turn to apply. I'm a bit nervous about where I'm at. Medicine has always been an interest of mine and I love working with people. I'm thinking about going for Pre-Med, Physical Therapy, or maybe Psychology.

SAT:
Total-1780
Critical Reading-600
Math-630
Writing-550

ACT:
Comp-26
Science- 29
Math-27
Reading-28
English- 22

My unweighted GPA is a 92. Weighted it's a 97. I'm in the top 20% of my High School Class. I've always been enrolled in Honors classes and am in an accelerated Math and Science program at school. I've taken two APs and will be taking AP Bio next year along with Anatomy/Physiology

ECs:
NHS member
About 100 hours of community service
Volunteer at a local hospital
Lifeguard at the YMCA
Played leading roles 3 consecutive years in the musicals at my school
Member of a male vocal group
Blackbelt in Shaolin Kempo Karate

I haven't taken any SAT Subject Tests yet, but based off of my average scores I'm going to. I've been working very hard over the summer and plan on retaking the SAT to get above a 1900. Some schools I'm looking at are Penn State Univ. Park, BU, Northeastern, UDel, and the University of Maryland.

well are you instate at any of these schools ? With your current SAT score you have a good chance at Penn State and UDel maybe then northeastern. i would say that BU and definitely UMD would be low reaches but not impossible.

I’m actually from NY which would make things a bit more difficult I’m guessing? Based off of some stats it seems as though Northeastern would be harder to get into when compared with BU

yeah being from ny it will make it more difficult i feel for you since im in nj we have the same competitive problem lol. i feel that northeastern and BU admissions are fairly similar i think northeastern has a lower acceptance rate but BU has more people applying. when you retake the SAT aim for a 2000.

your SAT is ****

Alright thanks for the advice! The comment really wasn’t necessary. I already am doing what I can to increase it as much as possible. Try something more creative about insulting my scores next time…

also if you dont mind we asking how much are your parents planning on contributing to your undergraduate education especially if you are considering med school.

Well we’re prepared to contribute about 20k. Around that. I know many schools are more expensive but Penn State is #1 on my list for a reason as of now lol

That was rude. Whether you care to admit it or not, his SAT score is still higher than most people’s. It may not be up to par with the Ivy-obsessed students that dominate this website, but it’s still a respectable score that can push him into some great schools.

Thank you very much for the support, it means a lot : ]

No problem. It’s bad enough that the people on this site are pulling their hair out over a 2000-2390, but when they directly put others down for their SAT scores, that’s just going too far.

well you still need to apply for financial so hopefully you will get some money there, Penn State basically gives no money to oos applicants all i got was loans from them this year and it costs almost 40 grand a year to attend. BU itself costs over 50 grand so you would need to get alot of money but that will be a stretch. UMD is another oos public where you can get some scholarship money but your scores will have to be around and above 2000. northeastern will most likely pose a similar problem and i think your best chance for money would be at udel. Since you dont seem to have any financial safetys on your list i would suggest you apply to at least a cuny or suny in ny since your instate and they have fairly reason tuition.

you have a good chance for UD

I know this is a few days late, sorry. But those are my out of state options as of right now. My list right now consists of UDel, Penn State, UMass Amherst, Maryland, BU, and Northeastern for oos. That list will shrink in about 2 months for sure based on costs because I know they will be pretty expensive compared to instate schools. As for instate I’m looking and SUNY Geneseo/Binghamton/Oswego and maybe Syracuse. This is still a rough draft for colleges and I’m working on it

i would suggest you also toss in stony brook as an instate option. Also syracuse although in new york is a private school so it costs about 54 grand a year for in state and oos so it would not be a good financial match.

I think with current scores you have good chances at Stony Brook, Syracuse, PSU, UMass and Oswego. Maybe for UD although they have so many applicants from NY that it is very competitive admissions wise (students from our school did not get in there with similar scores) for NY students at this school. Best of luck!
