Vice-Presidential Nomination

My son is just now getting around to applying for a Vice-Presidential nomination. It looks too easy. We only see two pages to fill out with no added paperwork necessary. Is that correct?

Yep...they will send a letter saying they got the info and to contact the SA for anymore info.

Remember there is only 1 VP appt for ea SA

Patriotmom - although the application is sent to the office of the VPOTUS, all are then forwarded to the academy admissions and the admissions office makes the decision.

only 1? i thought it was 5 per SA

No it is 1 per SA

"per SA"?

The VP cannot nominate to the USMMA (yes, a Service Academy). ;)

OOPS sorry Luigi

Each Member of Congress and the VP are allowed to have 5 cadets/mids at each of USMA. USNA and USAFA. Most of the time this 5th slot is not filled but held open for an "emergency".
This roughly works out to one per year. If a cadet/mid should separate before graduation the nominating source to which he/she is credited will pick up an extra slot.

okay, so i wasn't insane (in this case at least ;) ) 5 per SA, but roughly 1 per SA per year.

the presidential nomination (special qualifications, like parent of armed forces member) is also about as easy as the VP app. ie, write a little paragraph and fill in activities and such you've done

No, not "5 per SA."

He gets 5 for USNA, 5 for USMA, and 5 for USAFA.

ZERO for USMMA, which you may have forgotten is a SA.

In the past yr on this and United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin I have only met on line 1 person who got the VP. I just wouldn't bank on it. Let's be honest and real...you have 1 in @1500 to get it...not saying you won't...and you should def. apply for it, but you have a better shot with your MOC.

To us it was kind of the apply because you should, but we didn't believe that was going to be the way he would get in. Just my opinion

I have come across 3 or 4 candidates who received a VP nomination. In all cases it was in conjunction with an appointment and because they did not receive a nomination from any of their MOC's.
Sometimes a MOC will not give a recruited athlete a nomination - esp if the area is very competitive. In other cases, a candidate applied to USMA, USNA and USAFA and received an LOA to all three - their senator and/or congressman will not offer multiple nominations and the candidate must rank, therefore will not get a nomination to the three academies.

In October when the VP nomination is due, you just have no idea yet how your nomination/appointment quest will turn out - applying for the VP allows the Academy to appoint you if you are in need of a nomination.

The Presidential nomination is an "entitlement" based on a parent's military service. It is not competitive.

It is my understanding the VP gets 5 because he sits over the senate.

Oops. I see someone already corrected the 1 vs. 5 issue and yep, it is that easy. I can't help to wonder if it is just a drawing.....

HUH??
The Vice President gets the same number of cadets/mids as every congressman and US Senator.
The "5" refers to the total number of mids/cadets charged to the office at the academy at any one time.

It is not a drawing. There is NOTHING random about any aspect of admissions to any Service Academy. The decision is made by the Admissions office.

The major difference between the VP and MOC is the MOC submits a slate of 10. From that slate ONE appointment is charged and the others may be appointed as a part of the 150 appointments available from the national pool.
The Vice President does NOT submit a slate of 10 candidates.

Um, I was being facetious. I know that it isn't a lottery because I have been filling out paperwork, but thanks for your concern and corrections.
