My son applied as a transfer to Villanova. Since we are in California we aren't as familiar with it as some of the schools out here. Can anyone give me some pros and cons?

orangeco - You might want to check the Colleges forum here on CC to get some idea of the school. I don't think it compares to any west coast college I can think of, and the pros/cons are hard to address without knowing what your concerns are. (For example the new housing is really nice, but most seniors are still off campus.)

On the Main Line train to Philadelphia ... a Catholic school with a new and vibrant president ... well thought of in the tri-state and mid-atlantic area ... strong family feeling and connections ... strong alumni network ... definitely worth considering and worth a visit!

My husband is an alum ... and my son was recruited by Villanova for lacrosse but ultimately decided to go to a different school.

Villanova is expensive and I don't know how great they are with aid to transfers. Nor for that matter how good the housing options will be for a transfer. I think they only guarantee housing for the general student population for two years. so you might be admitted, but have to find off campus housing which can be a concern coming from CA.
Overall a very nice school, but the above would be two big points to investigate as a transfer.

It's an Augustinian school, located in the toniest part of the Philadelphia suburbs. A good regional school, well-regarded locally and with a good alumni network here (but probably not so much elsewhere). Relatively wealthy, relatively conservative, predominantly Catholic-preppy student body. Lots of parties, lots of practical career focus. I wouldn't worry terribly about living off campus -- it's a very nice area, although probably pretty expensive. Decent access by train to Philadelphia (and the Philadelphia airport), but it would be good to have a car to go anywhere else.
