Visit Maryland Day - Makes a Difference

I'm very interested in Maryland. I visited last April and loved everything about the school. I think I have a decent shot (3.9 weighted.....1310 CR/M SAT, good ECs, etc.). But will it help if I come down to the "Visit Maryland Day"? I'm from CT so it's not that close and the timing isn't great. But if attending will help them know how much I care about the school, I'll do it. I'm sure it will also be useful, of course, and that part will be great. It's just that the timing isn't terrific.

Maryland Day is a great experience and I’d recommend it to anyone considering attending UMDCP. However, just doing it to show additional interest in the school for admissions is likely not going to do much. A school of this size (and UMD specifically) is much more numbers-driven…SAT, GPA, and what’s on your application is what will make the difference.

So, if you already know you want to attend, you probably don’t need to make the trip specifically. Good luck!

I agree with Astro, UMDCP is going to look 1st at your stats. Then your essays. The only way I see this as a make or break is as a last ditch effort to get in. Even then I don’t see it as a deal maker.

I honestly don’t think the admissions people would even know that you’d come. Half of Maryland shows up.

Is the “academically talented program” version of this Visit Maryland Day basically the same thing?

Yeah, basically, except it’s a little nicer. Catered reception with linens and a jazz band and all that. Makes you feel special and makes the parents feel like you are special. But, it’s the same idea of a lot of people showing up, and probably no-one really noticing you are there. If you have time, though, and you or your parents are on the fence about you attending MD or even kind of reluctant about MD (as I was), the visit days can make you feel better about the school. They’re nice introductions to the place.

Catered?

You mean…
FREE FOOD :D

One thing to note is that for a few of the programs (Scholars, Honors, etc.) they’ll pass around a list if you attend one of their sessions at one of the visit days, and although it won’t affect your actual admission into the University, they do sometimes use those lists to see which students showed interest in the program (could help students on the fence), although it wouldn’t make drastic differences for admission into one of the programs – likely just a little boost. :)

My apologies…I read “Maryland Day” (which is a huge 1-day festival on campus, which, as Gina points out, half of Maryland shows up to) versus “Visit Maryland Day” which is entirely different. I still maintain that your application itself (and the stats behind them) is far more important in the grand scheme of admissions, programs, and scholarships. If you can’t make it, don’t sweat it…you will not have done any “harm” to your changes of getting into UMD>

Yeah I misread too.I forgot know Visit Maryland Day was a thing, I just thought your quotes were incorrectly placed.
