so i visited wake today...pretty school i liked it, however my only complaint is that i saw no southern hospitality....i feel that we new yorkers (and yes i live close to NYC so i can make that comment, im not in sum hick part of NY) are a lil more considerate of people then they were at that school.

They were pretty cold to my family and others who took the time and $ to fly to their school in the middle of nowhere, also they treated this one woman in a wheelchair like garbage and didnt help her as she struggled to wheel up a hill...not cool and a turn off. The tour guide was lame too.

Otherwise it was good, the cafeteria was pretty sweet...nice buildings, obviously good rep, surrounding area sucked, small dorms

Doogie- We had a wonderful experience both times we were on campus- (also for a tour last year and an interview this past summer) As far as the "southern hospitality", a good portion of the students are from the NY and NJ, I believe they make up more percentage-wise then any group! Good chance the non-wheelchair helping people were from NJ! (if so, I am surprised someoone did not push her down the hill to get her out of their way!) I can tell you, my family and I travel to NC quite frequently, and with real southerners, there is a real nicety about them. Maybe it is just not the place for you, so it is the way you saw it. I think the area is lovely, if you are looking for a "city in the middle of somewhere" why look at Wake? It is a "bubble" and not for everyone. ( we love bubbles here!) As for the dorms, we saw them, and my son's opinion was similar to yours, but he is attending for other reasons, and knows you can't have it all. Trust yourself and good luck!

i have a lot of family in the the area so i am quite familiar for I go down there often. The southern hospitality thing was a joke btw, i dont expect one area of the country to be especially nicer then another. However, the feeling i got about the coldness of the school was not limited to the school itself, i also felt it in the surrounding area.

My reason for choosing wake to apply to was because of its acceptance rate to medical school and respected science program. IMOP, wake isnt worth the 39 grand they are asking for, especially since its in winston-salem north carolina

This is the reason you go visit schools before you decide. Sorry you didn't get a good impression. Normally, I would say that if you were unsure, then try another visit (if feasible) to make sure your impression wasn't a fluke. However, it seems you are familiar with the area and have a pretty negative view of W-S, so WFU is probably not for you. Good luck on your college search and let us know what happens.

Yes, it's true that W-S is no Chapel Hill in terms of college towns, but it's not horrible either. It's pretty safe and there ARE some things to do.

If the hospitality thing is directed toward the students, I might give them a bit of slack; it's midterm week and everyone's pretty stressed out and running on very little sleep (well, that and most of the Jerseyites aren't that big on or aware of Southern hospitality, lol).

But this is why you visit a school before deciding to matriculate there. I'd suggest if you're still interested to come back for another visit later - I visited several schools more than once and got a different impression the second time around.

no private school in the south (especially wake) is worth 39...in proportion, that is so out of wack. Although thats something Ive learned to suck it up and accept cause college tuition is crazy anyway.

and its not that i hate wake or that i got a bad impression. I thought the school was great, there were things i just really did not like and felt that especially since the majority of the students applying are plane rides away, they should do a bit more to accomodate everyone and show a little more hospitality. For the most part i did like wake and could possibly see myself there because overall, it was a good school.

Im not bad mouthing the school in any way shape or form, its just I, and im sure alot of the other families that flew there, expected more in terms of getting some special attention. However, I must say...the woman at the front desk of the welcome center was SOOO NICE! lol i really liked her.

just wanted to explain wut i meant byspecial attention. I feel that wake should offer something a little more then a 2 hour visit for someone like myself who had to go out of the way to visit the school in a place that i would otherwise probably never be at lol. I mean Im from NY and as you can imagine, leaving from NYC by airplane is never a walk in the park, the def couldve offered more then a 2 hr visit

Glad you cleared that up, Doogie. I for one am sick of "in the south" remarks that mean something other then the cost of living. I am N.J. born and bred, but am sensitive to "in the south" remarks. (I guess I am a southerner at heart!) If people have something against the south, do us all a favor and stay "north"! :) Really Doogie, good luck! You have alot to offer any college, north or south!

u guys agree tho? i mean if you really look at it a 39,000 per year school in winston-salem north carolina is pretty expensive in comparison to the rest of the country. I mean NYU alone is about 44-47 i believe, and thats in New York City where we all know prices are astronomical

Doogie, I do believe it is high-but I also know people who have graduated who say it is hassle free living- parents have told me that Wake "babies" their students. I for one think an 18 year old has alot to learn, so I am fine with that! I also think the small class sizes are incredible, I can't tell you how mant people have told me the professors are great. I guess we pay for their huge salaries!! LOL! The study abroad is very attainable, and the campus events are great. I guess for a "city-slicker" it would not be the place. People have different opinions, I for one think George Washington in DC is very high, but other people love it! To each their own, as the saying goes.

I have a student at Wake and yes he as been very impressed with the professors, lots of one on one---some have even invited whole class to dinner at their homes. Though I'm told their salaries are less than those at Chapel Hill which is state school. Classes are small--my son corrected someone and said, "No, some of my classes are big--I have a bio lecture with about 40". He has no idea of what some lecture class sizes are at big schools.
He also has had the experience of the president of the university just sitting down with him at lunch "just to talk and share a meal". Also, he had the dubious experience of emergency suregery his first semester there and faculty and staff were quite accomodating.
All schools have their positives and negatives, but on the whole I think we're getting good service for our money.
Thank you njmom for the "defense of the south", I am a transplanted northerner and have fallen in love with the area.

mkm- Hello! My son (who posts as Willmingtonwave) will be attending this fall. We are so excited! We love N.C., we vacation a few times a year in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach. We are gladly sacrificing to send him to Wake,
his highschool principal attended many years ago (from N.J) We hear many great things from everyone about Wake. I am glad you have bloomed where you were transplanted, I can imagine it was not that difficult! Thanks, and maybe I'll meet you at Wake sometime!

njmom,
Your son should have no trouble adjusting. My S. said on his dorm floor, there were 2 of them from NC and the rest are from Jersey, NY, or the Philly area! So your son will get to enjoy the South, but still hear the accents from home! Hope he has a great time there.

Thanks for the words of encouragment, Mkm! Jubatojive- I have meant to ask- did you finally find your place a Wake? I remember you were having trouble with the preppiness? I hope so! Thanks for all your great responses, you have been a big help!

He's doing better. He is going to talk to profs at a couple other colleges over spring break, but I feel that is more to just explore all the options. He got a roommate change which seems to have helped tremendously and has a writing seminar prof that he idolizes. I try not to ask him too much, but he is talking of room assignments for next year.... Even though he is close to home, I feel the medical problems, girlfriends issues, roommate stuff, plus the premed work load all served to color his initial impressions and you know how hard those are to shake. He is taking time now to play basketball, go to some parties and I think is meeting more of a variety of people. Thanks for remembering and asking. By the way, my best friend here is from Wayne, NJ.
