Visiting ND (Football Weekend or Non Football Weekend)

Planning our first trip out to Notre Dame to tour with my S23. Any advice on whether to schedule it for a football weekend and go see a game or would it be better to go on an off weekend? Pros and Cons or any advice on visits would be appreciated

If you haven’t done a formal visit there before, going on a non-football weekend would probably provide a better idea of what campus life is like under normal circumstances. Although I hope that you would be able to visit with a Friday or Monday tacked on to that weekend visit, so that your son can see what classes/student activities are like on an academic day, and get an official tour. (Note – if you go on a Friday or Monday that is attached to a holiday weekend, however, you may be disappointed by the lack of students on campus.)

If your son ends up attending Notre Dame, then you could probably catch a football game on an official “Family Weekend” (or whatever it’s called at Notre Dame) when you visit your son; my wife and I did that with both our kids at their respective schools, and we enjoyed the atmosphere of the game-day weekends.

Football weekends would represent what the campus is like 7-8 weekends per year, not what the campus is always like. Those weekends it will be very very crowded. Hotels and restaurants will be backed and expensive. Maybe a lot of fun if that’s what you like, but very expensive.
