Visiting NYU

I'm taking a family vacation to NJ/NY and also going to take this chance to visit NYU (dream school). I won't be able to attend the informational meeting but will do a self guided tour on Saturday. I'm going to be applying to Steinhardt Music Tech program so I'll definately check out the steinhardt building. Are there any other buildings/locations I should visit while I'm on my visit? I know the Manhattan area very well as I lived in Flushing, NY before and have visited many times. I want to soak in as much as I can at NYU ;). Please help! Thanks!

If I recall, they don’t really let you into any of the buildings if you aren’t on a tour. Security is very thorough. Is there any way you can coordinate it with one of the tours? They seem to offer those very frequently. That way you can see inside the Bobst library, see a couple of dorms, the Kimmel Center, etc. if not, then definitely go for it anyway and walk all around Washington Square Park and the immediately surrounding blocks-you’ll see those purple flags flying everywhere which signifies an NYU building and will give you a great feel for the layout of things. You can also stop at the welcome center to pick up a map and other material that will help you if you’re exploring on your own.

If you are going to be in the NY area on August 2, I’d really recommend that you attend the junior connection program.

It is an unbelievable opportunity to meet with all the department heads. It is the closest opportunity for a student to get an “interview” at NYU by making real contact, asking questions and allowing them to put a face to your application. Both D’s did them. Older D did the one for the music department and every dept head was there from all the music programs and there were only maybe 20 attendees. Younger D did it for studio art and got to meet with the heads of the program in a conference room with maybe 6 other students.

Good luck!
