visiting U of Pitts

Pitt is my 1st choice, and I want to schedule a visit during the summer. when I visit the website, I noticed there are so many different type of visits, such as open house, get ready program, information session, campus tours...etc. and I dont' know which one to choose. can anyone explain the differences?

ps. is it possible if I don't schedule any visit, just go with my family, walk around campus and explore on our own??

ps. there's the freshmen group information session. is that for the students who are already admitted? or is it for rising seniors? or it doesnt' matter?

achang1990- Have you looked at this page?: http://www.pitt.edu/~oafa/oncmppgm_weekday.html#info
^ It explains the different types of visits.

You can walk around the campus by yourself to get your own feel for it-- I actually recommend it-- but you should also take an official tour so you can have your questions answered and to see some things that you might have missed.

I suggest that you take a formal tour with a Panther tour guide. Check the website and choose a time. Once you are admitted, there is an accepted students day for tours and plenty of planned activities for students and their families. It is an excellent opportunity when deciding if Pitt is for you. Accepted students day/wknd often seals the deal! good luck!

Take a formal tour, but leave ample time to check out other things. Honestly, the summer is probably the worst time to check out Pitt in my opinion...it's so much better in the early fall when people are there!! Enjoy, and send me a pm if you have any questions/things to look for.

we went out two weekends ago and spent two days in pittsburgh. we attended the friday seesions called "so you want to be a ... major"

the one we attended was for business majors. I thought Pitt did a great job with this program. showed up at alumni hall (stayed at the holiday inn about 75 feet from alumni hall) at 8:30, greeted by the students (panther tour guides) they had continental style breakfast food out for everyone to enjoy.

it was really cool, because they have along with the students a bunch of admissions reps who are there to answer any questions you have. I think its really important to go on a structured tour, then spend some time with your family touring the camous on your own. If you really want to go to pitt, you need to let them know this and one of the best ways to let them know is by showing up at a registered campus tour event. all those things get entered into the "system" and it shows that you have interest enough in pitt to make a trip out to see the campus. if you kust go on your own, the university may never know you actually came. also at lunch we were able to sit down with an admissions rep who directed a series of questions at my son and told him he thought he had a good chance of gaining admission.

the business school was really nice and the activities they had were very well planned. If possible, I would recommend spending a night and gertting outside and walking around to see what is going on at night. as the other person said, the summer is a real down time but its still a very interesting time to go and see what the campus is like. we went out at night to a "wings" place around 11pm and met a bunch of students who were out and about.

good luck!

thanks everyone. The admission reps and students sound nice, and I feel better now. I'm more of a shy person, plus I'm from another country and don't speak perfect english. I was worried that I might feel akward and uncomfortable talking face to face with some strangers and asking questions.
I live about 5 hours away from Pitt, i'm planning on attending the "so you wanna be program" for pharmacy on august 3rd, and there's a open house/campus visit/get ready program (can't tell the difference) on august 4th.

ps. Is Duquesne close to Pitt? I want to stop by and visit since they also have the pharmacy program I want.

ps. nycollegedad, when you attended the business major program. all they did was explain about the program?? did they show u around the campus, walk around the residence hall and talk about admission, financial aid and all that??

Duquesne is really close to Pitt. You can get on a bus at Pitt and in 10 minutes you will be at Duquesne! Of course, you can easily drive also. If you are applying to pharmacy, you should really check out both while you are here.

the "so you want to be a...major" program is great. very organized.

you start out at alumni hall at 8:30-9:00am for continental breakfast etc. you can speak with students and admissions reps (if you want to). You may find that many people will come up to you as well.

they will give you a folder with the itinerary for the day, an application and a bunch of other stuff.

then at 9am, you go upstairs in alumni hall for a presentation about the university, admissions, financial aid etc. if you want to get more detail about those topics, i would advise you to set up an appointment with the financial aid department or admissions. you can also approach those representatvies during the day.

after the presentation, we walked over to the business colege with a pitt student guide. we walked along with the pitt student so we could ask questiions along the way.

once at the business college building, which is really nice, you were able to attend three sessions that lasted for 30 minutes each. all were held in classrooms so you get an idea of what the rooms are like. the presentations we attended were led by professors and then we went to a student led presentation which allowed you to ask questions directly to the students about anything i.e. study abroad, the food on campus, school spirit, etc.

after these presentations, we went back to alumni hall for lunch which was really good because we sat at a table with an admissions rep and got lots of useful information.

after that we took a bus tour of tour of the city. and finally at the end, we took a walking tour and were able to see a dorm room in the towers building.

all in all it is a very full day. you can walk around the rest of the campus, although i would recommend driving. a good portion of the campus is up this huge hill, however for the most part that is where the medical students study so we didn't spend much time up there. we did drive up there to see the newer dorms, the basketball arena and the gym that is inside of the arena.

i think if you were to do the saturday session as well, it might be a bit redundant.

hope this helps

thank you so much nycollegedad, your post helps a lot!!! I think the get ready program and so you wanna be are a lot alike except the so you wanna be program explains the program, they both talk about financial aid and both have a tour around the campus. I think i'm just going to sign up for the so you wanna be program and spend another day visiting Duquesne.

ps. pictures are allowed on campus right? (just making sure.)

Walk around with a Pathfinder, but ignore most things they say. Its mostly propaganda. Meal plans great, towers great, yadayada. Do yourself a favor and don't fall for their sales pitch. Yes, you can snap away.

P.S.- The rec center and upper campus are very worth checking out..The residence/dining is waaaaay better. Oh, do yourself a favor and check out CMU briefly. Its only a km or so north, and the campus is nice.

I actually enjoyed my tour with the pathfinder. Most of what they told me proved true. I met great friends in Towers. At least Pitt offers various meal plans. You can take the lowest plan and just purchase food at other places around campus and you can use your panther card. The Pete has great food options and the food is pretty good, I agree.

does anyone know how far away the Hampton hotel is from the campus?

Are you talking about the Hampton Inn on Hamlet Street? It is about a mile (or maybe less) away. They have a free hourly shuttle that takes you to Pitt.

one other minor point. on our tour a few weeks back, they took us into one of the towers dorms and told us that a brand new dining facilility is opening this fall with many good food choices.

we could see the construction under way, but it did seem very convenient to have a new dining faciility in the dorm you are living in.

thanks everyone, ur info help a lot!!
I'm signed up for the so u wanna be pharmacy major program
and the hotel is booked
everything is under control
but i'm getting so nervous!!
pitt is 5 hrs from where I'm live
new place, new people, new everything!!

Nothing to be nervous about, everyone there will be going through the same thing. Gook luck, and have fun.

it'll be really fun. have a great time!

thx everyone!! umm nycollegedad mentioned to show up at the register center or somehting like that?? what do I do there? just tell them i'm here? and also when u went inside the alumni hall, did u have to report to somebody that u're there for the business program? or should I just sit there and wait for them to call?

oh one more.....were there a lot of students on campus when u visited??
