I’m bringing my S19 to visit U of R in October. I have two choices of hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn in Collegetown or the Holiday Inn Downtown on State St. We’ll be arriving Friday evening
The Hilton seems to be nicer. It is definitely more expensive, but still affordable. It seems to be walking distance to campus, which is convenient. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth a good bit more money compared to the Holiday Inn.
Any thoughts pro or con on the Holiday Inn besides the obvious, that we’ll have to Uber to campus? How’s the neighborhood? When we arrive Friday evening and want dinner, can we get something decent by the Holiday Inn or will we need to Uber somewhere?
Go with the Hilton for the walking distance to campus and to the Collegetown bookstore (right next door). If you are not staying there, I would stay at the Strathallan Doubletree, which is in a nice area east of downtown. You can also walk to the Eastman campus (15 minutes or so) and to restaurants/stores in the Park Ave area. I tried Uber when in Rochester and it worked well.
We really like the Staybridge Suites, which is right across the river from the River campus. Spacious rooms and hot breakfast included and, of course, the location. No need to drive, just walk across the bridge if you are able. It’s an IHG hotel, so you can get points towards IHG hotels that include, I think, Holiday Inn.
Hilton and Staybridge are the most convenient places. If you walk/drive too far the opposite direction from the University from Staybridge you may not like what you see. The area around the Hilton is much nicer as it is in the Strong neighborhood.
