visiting UCLA - looking for recommendations

I'll be visiting UCLA the week of February 20th with S2, who is a high school junior. He is a math/science/sports guy.

I am looking for recommendations as to what to see, where to eat, and anything that is happening that week. We are doing the usual tour and visiting at least one student we know. We also plan to see the sports hall of fame.

If any current students have recommendations, including Westwood and environs, that would be appreciated.

The weekend of that week there's the dance marathon, a 24 hour dance event sponsoring pediatric aids.

The new Physics and Astronomy Building should pique your son's interest...

the PAB is SO COOOL!!

The money used to pay for the talking elevator was money well spent

not really. if its the same ones as in Rieber Vista, they're prone to breakdown. :(

I've visted the UCLA & Westwood area quite frequently recently and there are MANY great places to eat in the area. There is basically a restaurant for every cuisine there! It ranges from a proper sit down to a fast food type thing. For dessert, two words: Diddy Riese! Its a trademark of the area and offers delicious cookie icecream sandwiches. Rodeo Drive is not too far from the school either and definitely is something to visit. That's pretty much what I can think of... I hope you two have a great visit! :)

oh no, its different - the ones in PAB have sweet engraved doors :)

Once you're done with UCLA, go west on Wilshire to Third Street and check out the promenade there.

What is this "talking elevator?" I'm always on North Campus so I don't get to see the cool things going on down on South Campus, but this sounds like it might be worth a trip. :)

thanks so far for the suggestions.

I know that Westwood has lots of restaurants (it was my friday night haunt when I was in HS a million years ago). What I'm looking for is a specific recommendation of a cafe or restaurant that is not to be missed. Diddy Riese sounds good...any others?

South of Westwood on Venice Boulevard (in Culver City) is Versailles that offers the best Cuban food! http://www.frommers.com/destinations/losangeles/D40916.html It's authentic, very reasonably priced (and you get enough for two meals!), and very casual. It can also get very crowded, so get there before the dinner rush if possible.

For science, definitely visit the LaBrea Tar Pits down Wilshire Boulevard. If your S (or you!) enjoy comics, there are two great exhibits at the UCLA Hammer Museum (in Westwood off Wilshire) and at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Have fun!

There's also a permanent "exhibit" at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash...

Damon and Pythias is really, really good and down the street from Diddy Riese on Broxton. Reasonably priced and the portions are pretty generous.

BJs Brewery has deep dish pizza and omg. Pizookies. Which, in my opinion, generally beat out Diddy Riese.

That's all I can think of at the moment. But seriously, now I want a Pizookie.

Fake Sub
208-2354

Pizookies are some of the greatest things ever invented by humans!

California Pizza Kitchen is a good, if not particularly inspired, standby. I recommend their garlic chicken pizza. BJ's is also good. Be sure to catch a movie at the Fox Theatre (across from CPK), where many movie premieres are held. Really lovely, art deco interior.

mmm CPK... amazing... CPK.
its all about the tomato basil garlic pizza. duh.

Aren't CPK and BJ's located in a lot of areas, therefore, it's not really a good recommendation, in my opinion.

Yeah, it's like recommending the Burger King in Westwood...
(Nothing wrong with Burger King...)

There's always In-n-Out and their secret menu!
