I need everyone's help to travel to West Point. From California, I will arrive at the JFK airport. So, from the JFK airport how will I get to West Point. I was recommended to take the Short Line Bus, but, i think, that the bus wouldn't pick me at directly at the Airport, so how would I get to the Short Line Bus from the airport?? This is how I will be trying to get to West Point. I reason I picked JFK is its flexible and typically cheaper price, especially from LAX. Can anyone elaborate from my route and help me fill in the holes?

Thank you and look forward to your response.

The bus runs out of the Port Authority in Manhattan and has limited times.

This is what you should do:
at JKF take the bus to Grand Central Terminal. buy a round trip tickets then you will have one for the return trip. It is right out the door at baggage claim.

AT GCT take the train - Metro North to Peekskill and get a cab. You can get off at Garrison but all the cabs come from Peekskill - MTA Home Page

I agree with everyone above, but would add that at times it is best to call for the Taxi to meet you in Garrison prior to arriving at the station. Call from Grand Central and give the Taxi Company the approximate time of your arrival and they will be waiting on you when the train arrives.

WAMom68, would the shuttle bus or subway constantly go from JFK to Port Authority bus terminal? Or is there a certain schedule for that too? In addition how much will this typically cost, all together?

If, I were to take a cab from JFK to West Point. Roughly, how much would the cost be?

Now, if it took the JFK to Grand Central Station, then Metro-North train to Garrison, then taxi, how much would that cost?

Also, between the two schedule, which one is most flexible with time? the Port Authority bus terminal or the Garrison?

Thank you and I look forward to your response.

JFK to GCT = $27 round trip
Metro North to Garrison = about $30 round trip
Taxi from Garrison to WP = about $20 one way I think

The train to Garrison is must more flexible with time as the train runs many times a day.
The bus leaves the Port Authority in Manhattan only twice a day at 8:45 and 11:15 am.

In my opinion, taking the shuttle bus from JFK to Grand Central, and then taking the train to Garrison is the best option. The shuttle bus runs frequently all day and so does the Metro-North Train. It sounds complicated to someone like me who does not use public transportation very often, but it really isn't difficult. Taking the subway from JFK to GCT is more complicated because you have to change trains, which is why I opted for the bus when I went this route last October.

JAM has the estimated cost in her post but if you check out the links in my previous post you will find the schedules and prices for the shuttle bus and the train. You can purchase the shuttle bus ticket online in advance or right outside baggage claim at JFK. When you get to Grand Central look for the kiosk in the middle that says "Metro-North". The nice people there will tell you when the next train is and which track it is on. You purchase your ticket at one of the many machines located throughout G.C. Just follow the instructions on the machine.

FWDAD idea of calling the taxi company from G.C. is a good one. Look up the taxi company phone number online before you leave home. In my son's experience it is usually $20 one-way for the taxi unless he can find other cadets to share the ride, then they charge $10 per person one-way. One tip - always find out the rate BEFORE you get in the taxi. You don't want to get to your destination and find out they want more money than the cash you have on you.

How long does it take from Garrison to West Point?

In addition, if I buy a round trip ticket, am I limited to come back on the same day or can I come back any day?

Also, if I don't reserve a shuttle ride or metro ticket would it be ok? Meaning, if I don't reserve it, I would still have a seat on the bus or would there be so many people that I would be left out.

Thank you for your detailed, informative response. Now, I don't have to stress out about it too much.

I'm curious as to why no one uses Stewart airport, (11k ft runway) about 15 miles from West Point? Seem to have plenty of flights from easy connections/hubs (Detroit, Philly, Orlando, Atlanta).

Are the flights that much more expensive than JFK/bus/train/taxi + your time?

They do use Stewart - however those coming in from the West Coast get much cheaper ticket prices than flying right into NY. Stewart can work well for folks flying on the Eastern Seaboard.

Cadets generally use 4 airports - Stewart, Newark, JFK and LGA. It all depends what part of the country you are coming from and ticket prices etc.
When Cadets travel en masse, i.e. leave periods then shuttle busses run to and from those 4 airports for $20-$30 a ticket round trip. This makes travel much simpler.

kpsong87 - I am not sure why you would take a taxi from the Port Authority to West Point. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Luigi...most of us who can use Stewart love it; however, Airtran no longer flies there, so Delta has raised prices due to no competition (at least from Atlanta). Delta is also down to one direct flight per day...for PPW we chose the late flight that went via Detroit...it was cancelled due to the flight attendant doing a no-show...so we would have missed our connection if we went on to Detroit...so we were re-routed to Newark (bleh!!). Although Stewart will remain my favorite for proximity to WP, if I cannot go on a direct flight into there, I will go into White Plains. It is by far easier to navigate to WP than Newark (although at 1 a.m. the traffic was not an issue). If my cadet were flying alone and needed public transportation, what JAM4 recommends above is the best plan.

JustAMomOf4 - I definitely agree. The reason why I asking for a taxi, knowing that the price will be very expensive, is scheduling. My tour begans at 8:15a - 8:30a, and my original schedule was JFK - Grand Central - Garrison - WP, but timing to all of that would make me at least 1.30 hours late, and the lady at admission was very stingy about timing. So, if I wasn't limited to time, then I would take the full opportunity to explore various, effecient ways to get to WP, but b/c this is something i do not have, it is defintely becoming a lot more stressful.

And Luigi, LAX to Stewart scheduling is very inelastic, so I'm picking airport with the most flexiblity. Also, JFK is cooler hands down.
