I'm still in high school and I am interested in dentistry. I need some volunteer hours and thought hey why don't I volunteer at a dental office. Not sure who to ask.. do I ask the dentist himself, the front desk lady? Also, do dental offices even need volunteers? If so, what work would high school volunteers do in a dental office?

A doctors office probably wouldn’t want or need a highschooler to volunteer. However, what you could do is seek out an internship at a research facility in the field of dentistry. For example, I’m interested in cardiology and I’m currently doing a summer internship at NYU medical center, and I’m working with leading doctors. I don’t know where you live, but your best bet is to check out a local college, prefarably a med school, and talk to people in the dentistry division. Good luck with the search

If you are near a large teaching hospital, they may have a dental residency program (known as GPR- General Practice Residency) or an AEGD ( Advanced Education in General Dentistry). They would be more likely to let you volunteer or ‘shadow’ them. If not, if your local hospital has a dental department, ask them. Or if there is a dental school nearby, ask them.
