W grade affect on transfers

I am a freshman at NYU’s School of Engineering with a GPA of 3.6 atm. This time next year, I’ll probably start applying to a few places to transfer like Purdue, Georgia Tech, USC, other similar places etc. This semester I’m taking a class called MATLAB which has nothing to do with my major (chemical engineering), but is a first year requirement. I’ve been struggling with it for a while, and after my test next week, I’ll probably have an idea of how bad I’m doing. If I mess up badly (Less than a C or something), I’ll probably consider withdrawing. Will a W grade impact my chances, even though I doubt I’ll take MATLAB again in the school I transfer to, since they general don’t have CS requirements for ChemE. I’d like to keep my GPA near the 3.4-3.6 mark before I try for a transfer
Thanks

And btw, I have 18 credits this semester. After withdrawing, I will have 15

I don’t think so. I spoke to an admissions counselor at USC over summer and he told me to keep W’s to a minimum, but he said that having 1 won’t really impact my admission process. If this is your first W, I’m sure it will be fine, but try to get in contact with an admissions rep at whichever school you want to transfer to if you’re still unsure.

Thanks. Yeah, this is my first W. And probably over the next year, I won’t have more because I can do well in science and math classes.

Then I think you should be fine. Again, contact an adviser from the school you want to transfer to just to make sure. I think universities expect you to withdraw because honestly you never know- you might end up hating a class after the deadline to drop without a W, so they give you some leeway.
