W or a C

I'm currently at community college in Texas. I have a 4.0 GPA currently and 28 credits. I'm currently taking a 12 credits. I'm hoping to transfer UT Austin in Spring 2015.

My Problem is that I'm currently in a history class were the professor is extremely difficult. I will probably get a C in this class. Is it better to withdrawal from the class and get a W or finish the class and get a C which will lower my GPA to around a 3.8?

Also Iv never gotten a W before and my teacher stated he doesn’t believe in A’s then went on a rant about the school system.

I would take the W and repeat the course with another instructor. But if you’re on financial aid, better check with a finaid advisor first. Dropping to 9 hours could be a serious problem.

You should only be three to four weeks into the semester. Are you grades so bad already that the best you can get is a C. Have you met this professor during office hours? I would certainly look at all those options before taking a W on a class. When I see a W, I see a student who was failing and didn’t want the F. And please be very aware of what @wasatchWriter said. Dropping below 12 for a full time student can cause you problems, even a C with your current GPA should not cause you an issue with a transfer to UT.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to drop the class…

Wow. Do the world a favor and put this on a few professor-ratings websites

Don’t worry. One “W” will not look as bad as you think on your transcript. If you only had one W then it shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Colleges look mostly to see that it’s not a regular pattern.
