Wait List.

We, too, were under the impression that once you committed to one, you were locked in.

br2011: not an arguement, but a discussion.

Profmom- you are correct; this information was not on the USNA acceptance form....for 2009 or 2010....nor was it on the acceptance form for USMMA for 2009..... where it was printed was on the acceptance form to USMA for the class of 2009, which is what i posted. In trying to understand the difference, I was curious if it was related to NCAA rules/regs, which does take a rocket scientist to wade through.... this seems not to be the case, so I remain at a loss as to understand why one academy, in 2009, would make that a requirement while others did not. And since it was in 2009, things no doubt have changed- which is why I suggested making a phone call to be sure.

nurserypoo: that was our understanding for USMA Class of 2009..... Semper Gumby....

celticclan- not condesending, but a wake up call. Reading critically, and carefully. Step in if you must, but drawing such conclusions so early on may find you incorrect in your assumptions. No offense intended, and no offense taken I hope. What you will come to realize is that in nearly 1800+posts, what I have shared is the best information I can offer, having gone through the process not once but twice over, on the same roller coaster ride as everyone else. What I have come to realize is that the experience is different for everyone, there is no "magic formula," and that things change- all the time. This site remains a great souce of information for those willing to listen- take from it what you might, discard what you will, and use it not as a sole source of information, but a source nevertheless. I may not agree with all that gets posted- and i may even challenge some information or postion from time to time- but the intent is to help, and it has never been to discourage, and I challenge you to find one post that speaks otherwise. What you view as "condesending" is simply a challenge to think about what is being said. There is no need for you to come to the aide of the "kids"...I have no doubt they have the capacity to figure it out for themselves.

but I believe the main contradiction between our points and yours is that all we would like is to have the same opportunity to fairly decide between all 3, because unlike your son, others dont have the luxery of having all 3 (or two) on the table at once.

lastly, Rkavanaugh: I both understand and appreciate your post; however....
opportunity does not come knocking, it is a result of effort. If the thorpedo had the opportunity to decide between 3 service academies, it is because he worked hard to give himself that opportunity. It is not a luxury, but the result of pure effort and determination, focus and committment. No doubt you have worked hard as well, and no doubt you will give insightful thought as to where you will decide to go.

The process is "fair" to all: letters go out by a set date, and acceptances must be in by a set date. If you have worked hard, made the best of the opportunities before you, I have no doubt that everyone will have several offers of admission to choose from.

I wish nothing but fat letters coming to your mailbox, but the reality is that while a lot of great kids will get an offer of appointment, many, many more really great kids will get turned away- so while you have the opportunity to make your candidate file the best it can be, don't waste a minute of it not doing so.

If you are sitting with an appointment in hand but waiting for the USNA letter to arrive, which was the origonal question posted, there is still time.... as long as you get your acceptance letter in by may 1st. Best of luck to all of you still waiting.

I was waitlisted too. I am a freshman in college right now, but I am also applying to civilian colleges. The Academy has been a dream of mine for a while, but I know for you people who have just applied once that you think it is the end of the world...I know people who are alumni that applied three times before they were accepted (no joke). Bottom line=> MANY and I mean MANY people drop during and before I Day because they find out that it isn't "for them." So, if you're on it, you have a pretty good chance of going...this is what I say.

And for the other academies--if you want to be in the navy, wait for USNA, if not, go elsewhere. After all, you WILL be in the service which you join regardless of whether you want to or not.

Who is all waitlisted?

CardinalSTL

We had a long wait list. We are at May 1. Anyone have any good news?

No news yet. What do you mean by a long wait list? Do you know how many or how it works?

there's quite a few people from this board on the list.

here's how I see the list (pure speculation)

approx 2000 3Q'd with nom
1400 appointments out (according to the wait list letter)
this leaves 600 3Q'd noms left. judging from this site (and i know my stat teacher will be mad at me for taking such a bad sample:)) ive seen about a half of the remaining people w/out appointments get rejections and the other half get wait listed, so now down to 300. judging from years past they typically give out 1500 appointments so that means about 100 more appointments will be given out. I would say each waitlister has about a 1/3 chance of getting an appointment

again pure speculation. any other guesses on chances and how this will work?

I've heard they first go thru and ensure each rep has someone in the academy. After that I am not sure how the selection is made. My BGO did not know either.

Anyone on the wait list hear anything yet?

One of my waitlisted candidates heard from his congressman's staff yesterday that the Academy would soon be forwarding an offer of appointment. That is, some of the waitlisters are beginning to hear.

I know that some of you are waiting to hear the same. Best of luck to you in the days ahead.

Has anyone gotten anything in the last few days about coming off of the Wait List? I.e. any new Appointments issued?

No word yet and no sign other than what Oskiwow said that things are starting to move on the wait list. It was a busy week and weekend at the academy with all the activities and such. May see more action this week in regards to waitlist.

There probally will not be much movement on the wait list until I-Day, for there are kids who do not show up on I-day and those who drop out in the first week or so. I do not know if they try to maintain 1215 Plebes throughout Plebe Summer or not, but, I do know someone who was called on Labor Day weekend and was told he had 24 hours to report. Do not give up waiting...

Really?

Seems odd sense at PPW the number was down by 30 and by the end of the semester the class size was ~1185. Sons Company had a guy leave very early in Plebe Summer and no one ever replaced him.

I heard that as well from a recent graduate. Once they are more than a few days into the start of the summer, they do not replace.

I will have to second profmom- I don't think anyone was called up to replace anyone in the Class of 2010.

Sorry for this news but...this is just another urban legend that goes around this time of year. As a BGO, this topic was clarified once again, those who drop on I-Day are not replaced. We just call this attrition, which is expected with any incoming class. Please, do not show up at the gate ready to replace someone who doesn't show up, this is not part of the appointment process.
Best wishes to everyone!

Um, I personally know a mid who was called and reported 10 days into Plebe summer for the class of 2008. My son was very surprised when he ran in to his friend (literally!) in the P-way and found out that he was one of a few who were called to report. I don't know why, but I do know that, at least in this one instance, it was not an urban legend. I would second, though that you should not show up at the gate, since then you wouldn't be home to get the call if one should come. :)

BTW, both my son and his friend are still there. They will be firsties TOMORROW! Yikes!

^^^^ it is my understanding that while this occured for the class of aught-eight, this was the only year it was done, for reasons unclear. It did not happen for the class of 2009 or 2010- would not count on anything changing for this year, and I would second militarylife that coming to the gate without a ticket would be most unwise.

congrats to your new "firstie" !!! wonderful!!!
