Does anyone have any information on the wait list-- size etc. Also does anybody have any sense of how the admissions numbers look and whether the school is going to have to go to the waiting list? Also, has anyone on the waitlist gotten any encouragement-- phone call, e-mail, personal note etc?

I'm not on the waitlist, so I can't answer the questions about what other people have received, but I understand that Williams rarely pulls from its waiting list. And, since it is an unranked list, people on it have no idea where they stand--I think the college uses it to grab people with special talents, attributes, etc. they feel are missing (and to reach their target class size, which is 538 this year).

That's the party line. But I think I read somewhere that they took a lot of students from the wait list last year. They admitted more students this year tp try to correct the situation. I am hoping that their yeild will be down a bit and their calculations will be off. I guess time will tell.

They waitlisted 1213 applicants last year.

506 of those accepted a place on the waitlist.

65 were offered an acceptance into the freshman class from the wailist.

Methinks the waitlist will be hopping this year

What the heck does unranked mean? Is it a lottery where they pull from a hat? Seems strange.

It just means that they see how many people they need and they re-evaluate the waiting list to see if there are gaps- if they need more women or more football players, or more flute players....

I noticed that there are 315 members of the Williams Class of 2011 on Facebook. Does anyone have any idea of what percentage of students who have decided to go to a particular college join the facebook page. This might give a clue about yield.

A lot of them are waitliste like us :D

See, Amherst's group has 306.00 members and as of today 445.00 have enrolled. Considering the fact that Amherst and Williams are so similar, this means 0.68764044943820224719101123595506 percent of 538(= 369.95056179775280898876404494382) should have joined. This means they'll still take 54.95056179775280898876404494382 off the waitlist.

EDIT: Has anyone else received confirmation of their reply card?

no, it's more like 10%

-matriculating williams student

Are you saying that based on the Amherst/Williams comparasion, Williams should take 53 or 54 students off the wait list. This seems high. I know that they took 65 last year, but they increased the number of acceptances by 50 this year. So if the calculation is correct, it will mean that the yield is down. Any thoughts?

From the Admission Office website:

"Waitlist Status
We encourage waitlisted candidates who remain interested in Williams to send us a short update detailing activities and achievements since submission of their applications. We will know by the second week of May if we are able to make offers to waitlisted candidates, at which point we will notify admitted students directly."

It looks like waitlistees will be notified by, at the latest, one week from today if they are going to be offered a place in the Class of 2011.

I got a letter confirming my reply card.

Where did you get that quote onemoremom? Was it in the waitlist letter?

It's on the main page of the Admission Office site at williams.edu.

Anyone else get a call from admissions today? I haven't called them back yet, though... but hopefully I can assume it's good news?

It sounds promising.

That means you are in.

Last year the first phone call went on 6th of May. Has anyone else received a call?

ugh. how depressing is that for me to hear :'(.
So, if I'm getting off the wait list I should expect a call?
