waiting to hear about pre orientation stuff, thought it would be in mail by now

Anyone getting anything? We got packet 2 some time ago and it said the pre-orientation info would be mailed end of June.

Anything yet? Also, in the next month or so would like to help my D gather things needed for dorm life and school etc. Here is what we have so far:

Residence Linens College Pkg bedding(Hope they are good, anyone use them?)hamper, underbed storage, desktop fan, floor fan, eating utensils, deck of cards, dust buster small hand vac.

Was wondering too if anyone knows if the beds in Jones Hall are stackable for bunks and/or if they are the kind of beds that have room under them to store stuff. Anyone live in Jones or have a friend there that could tell me?

How do you know she's assigned to Jones Hall?

I was told by a housing rep on June Day that guided studies kids are in Jones.

I got the sheet set through the college and they weren't very good (although I'm still using them two years later, go figure). They were overpriced and the white thing that goes under the fitted sheet (don't know what it is called, forgive me, I'm male) was incredibly cheap. The only reason I bought it was because I couldn't find extra long single sheet sets but people have told me they are not that hard to find in a bedding store. You will probably want to get a foam cushion, they are usually yellow and have an egg carton design...they can be had in Target for about $11 and it doesn't really matter that they are not extra long because they simply won't go under the head which is supported by pillows.

Beds in Jones are in no way stackable, which is unfortunate, they are solid wood and sit about a foot off the ground, enough room for a few rubbermaid containers but little else. There is a method for putting your bed above your armiore and desk that saves a bunch of room, but that is one bed only and you must get up to it with a ladder...its actually kind of cool because you have your desk under your bed like a little fort.

As I recall there was a lull in packets between June and July. If you don't hear anything by the end of the week you could try and call admissions and at the very least they will tell you when the next packet is sent out.

You might want to trade the desk fan for a window fan in Jones....it is only hot the first and last months of the year, but it is hot and a desk fan doesn't do much unless it is placed in front of a window. I know we always hung out in the few rooms with a window fan in the warm months. Tell her to keep the floor fan year round as the heat keeps the rooms very hot in the winter as well. As for asthetics...Jones doubles have a lot of blank cinder block wall space...make sure she brings plenty of posters because the cinder block gets to you amazingly quickly. If you have toured the room they show is a Jones double.

Luliztee, we were there for Advising Days and they told us that they do not have dorm buildings assigned yet and just because I AM in GStuds does not mean I am in Jones...probably but not definitely. No doubt, because of the extra response in acceptances and the addition of the Culinary Institute Hotel, dorms assignments may be moved around a bit.

Go to the "Starting Out" section of the Trinity website. It tells you when the packets will be mailed. We were told that the roommate/dorm packet will be mailed the first week or two of August.

Luliztee, the "Starting Out" packet we received earlier has the estimated dates on the inside cover. It says that the orientation materials will be mailed in July, so don't fret yet. No doubt you have seen the "What To Bring To Trinity" list on the website. I am following the list, except for the "husband" which seems like it will be too large for the room. It would be nice if the site had room layouts with dimensions so we know where to put the bits when we are assigned our rooms, but that is probably my OCD talking.

Ask and you shall recieve...here are floor plans...just follow the links to the dorm....I will try to post dimensions in a few minutes because Trinity took them off their site. <a href="http://www.trincoll.edu/StudentLife/campuslife/residential/halls/%5B/url%5D">http://www.trincoll.edu/StudentLife/campuslife/residential/halls/</a></p>

jtvoyager...aren't you nice! When I saw your reference to the website I was stumped because I thought I knew it fairly thoroughly. Gratefully, you added that the dimensions were removed and saved my sanity! What a cool thing to have when I get the assignment! I have copied it so I have it at hand when MY time comes. BTW if I am in Jones and the room looks pretty small, how many "crates" should I have...is four about right? Thanks for your help.

Ginger...it took me a while to figure out what you mean't about "crates" but I found the list (here it is for others <a href="http://www.trincoll.edu/Academics/FirstYearProgram/FirstYearProgramOffice.htm#WhattoBringtoTrinity%5B/url%5D">http://www.trincoll.edu/Academics/FirstYearProgram/FirstYearProgramOffice.htm#WhattoBringtoTrinity</a> ) I had, and still have, one big underbed crate. The beds are as wide as a normal single bed and just a tad longer so depending on how big the crates you are buying are it depends...you could of course just pick some up when you get here, the book store sells them at jacked up prices and Wal-Mart has cheapies. Those husband pillows are a mixed bag too. I bought two only because Target had some on clearance for 2.99 (how can you beat that?) but gave them both away over the past year because I had no use for them and had to throw them off the bed every night. Finally, you might want to take that entire list with a grain of salt...I brought a whole roll of quarters for the laundry machine only to find that they operate only using Bantam Bucks (your ID card) and remember that your roommate may be bringing a vacuum or whatnot, so you might want to wait to get in touch with them before buying anything major.

Thank you jtvoyager...I assumed that the list was not gospel. I figured that I would be throwing the "husband" on the floor more often than not. (Ha-Ha) I'm just bringing an extra pillow. I'll wait for the roommate assignments and we'll split up the stuff. I'm not one for alot of clutter. Judging by "June Advising Days" I guess we need a micro-fridge for drinks and snacks like fruit. Why would I need a microwave? Everyone at "June Days" was saying we need one? Is it just more crap in the room? The computer website link led me to believe that I do want a printer in my room. The site said on a normal basis, send everything to the group printers, but that at term paper and exam time, the wait for documents could be quite long. Yes? Printers are cheap so it's not the $$, it's the space issue. Also, do I really need/want an area rug? I hear conflicting stories that: (1) the rooms are cold in the winter; (2) the dorms are over-heated. Which is the answer? I am used to the cold since I have lots of family in New Hampshire...but I don't want to be an idiot either. You have been great help. Thanks for your time.

The only thing I ever used my microwave for was reheating left-overs. If you are going to be snacking on fruit and chips I suppose you wouldn't need a microwave (although your roomie will probably bring one, as mine did), but if you want to reheat the Indian food you had the night b4 at 3 am it is good to have. A small printer/scanner (HP makes some nice little boxy ones for about $100) is good to have. Despite what I have seen posted, there are no group printers in the dorms (at least not in Jones, Elton, or Little) and all public printing must go through the library. It is open 24 hrs but if the printer jams up at 3 am you are pretty much screwed because no one is around to fix it and the printers are inaccessable. You do get 25 dollars worth of free printing per semester, so most people choose to print long documents and research at the library, but for day to day printing a personal printer is more convenient. That being said I do have a friend with no printer and she seems to do alright (although she did eat up 14 of my free printing dollars in one night to fill out her damn scholarship applications). I see you are concerned about the space issue, so was I, it seems like so little space but you quickly learn management techniques (the printer goes on top of the stereo which is on top of the microwave on top of the fridge etc). If you plan to do any walking around in bear feet at all you will want an area rug, not even so much because of the cold, but because the floors get dusty very quickly. Don't get white though, the ketchup stains from the food you bring back from the cave really show up on those. Glad to be of help...any other questions just ask.

thanks for the romm measurements!

wow thatz a whole lot of useful info for us jtvoyager.. thx a bunch :)
and just for the record, the startin out packet 3 was mailed out today maybe.. cuz i found it online at trin's website.. y'all can check it out.. i knw it would take another mth for me 2 get it here in bangladesh

just saw website. But still nothing about pre-orientation info. Oh well, no biggie, I can wait. i had seen the choices Arts,Bike riding, community service, rock climbind and one other i think. It was on website and it mentioned a fee of 125.00 but just wanted to know more. Sounds like you pick from these themes by selecting first, second ,third choice etc. in order of interest and they give you what is open. i was curious about dates and specifics though. I had heard they are 4 days long and begin the 4 days before check in day(8/31) but would like to confirm.

Not sure if this could be a pro or con to settling in. More confusing and hectic, too much in a short time of trying to adjust or fun and stress reducing getting to know people and fixing up room etc?

Anyone do this thier first year and how did you find it in context of adjusting to the new school schedule and new enviroment. Pro or Con?

Everyone I have talked to who has done one of those programs has come away with a positive opinion of it. Also, coming from someone who went to a non-residential public hs...settling into Trinity is not all that hectic, I met a lot of great people in my first day (in my first hour!) there. And they do so much orientation and stuff that it keeps your mind occupied. Rule of Thumb...about 3 days after you check in when you are skipping out on the 'be tolerant of everyone' seminar to go play pool, you are officially settled in.

Edit: Actually, the girl I met in the first hour turned out to be a b**ch, so take this advice with a grain of salt.

thanks jt...i liked the skipping out comment, lol

I can't wait to skip out of the "be tolerant of everyone" seminar and play pool! I'm a big city kid and have lots of friends of every race/ethnicity/sexual orientation/gender, etc....the only people I am NOT tolerant of are like the two girls I met during "June Advising Days" who spent 45 minutes telling a bunch of us how brilliant they were, their GPAs, their rank, how many APs they took and how they couldn't figure out why they didn't get into "name that Ivy". Ugh! I met some great kids on "June Days" and on VIP day which had so many cool people...that day convinced me that Trin would be great.

If you are intolerant of those types of people Ginger, I hate to tell you that they are a majority at Trinity. Don't worry though, because there are plenty of normal people too, they are just a little harder to find, don't be surprised (like it surprised me) if it takes you a little longer to make friends (it may not) at Trin than at home. Basically what I'm saying is if you liked the people you met June Days (as I did) you'll be fine, great people just might be a little sparser than you are used to.
