The process did not end for everyone on April 1st. Dartmouth was my D's first choice but she received the official waitlist letter instead. It is crushing when it is your child's dream school, especially when other colleges of equal calibre offered admission. We were hoping other members could offer their ideas and support during this very frustrating period.
-How does Dartmouth determine who on the W/L/ should be offered admission? What is the process?
-What can a student or the parents do to improve the chances, if anything. I've read the boards, but now I need experience and insight.
-How many students may be offered admission this year from the W/L?
-Does Dartmouth rank?
-Are athletes and URM's also on the W/L?
-When does Dartmouth advise the W/L students if they are being offered admission?
-How do they notify the student?
-How many students were admitted from the W/L in recent years?
-Is this year any different than other years?
-Has everyone on this board who has been waitlisted asked to be kept on the W/L? Has anyone asked NOT to be W/L?
As always, thanks in advance!

i accepted my spot on the wait list. and yes, there are URMs and athletes on the wait list. the WL is kind of like a backup class, if you think about it. Say for whatever reason, a very small percentage of accepted URMs enrolls - they then have to fill up the class with URMs to keep the diversity. Likewise, if some top athlete or other declines acceptance, they may fill their spot with another good athlete on the WL.

I was admitted RD but will be giving up my spot sometime next week. My major was going to be engineering sciences/Thayer, so anybody on the waitlist with that interest area should drop a little reminder note to admissions. I love Dartmouth but cannot turn down an extraordinary windfall financial package (totally unexpected) from a school that's top 3 in my specialty. Best of luck to all.

I don't know about the athlete situation because coaches have already got the players they need. The athletes who decline to go there are most likely the ones who are not highly recruited. About the URM W/L, unless a distinct percent of them decline to go, then they will use the W/L URMs.

The W/L itself is supposed to be unranked, and the commitee is supposed to read the applications again in case they need the W/L.

I believe for the class of 2005, they didn't use a single person from the list, but in past three years, they have taken somewhere between 15 to 25 (the numbers are not completely accurate).

I don't think any number can be predicted at this point, but I hope they need the W/L because I'm a waitlisted kid too.

Just a question: anybody knows any way to boost our chances?

wait wait, what? i thought they wl'ed around 800 and accepted between 100 and 200?

or did i pull those numbers out my arse?

For the class of 08

1275 placed on the waitlist
790 accepted a place
24 were admitted from waitlist

LOL AHAHAHAHA WOW that the probably the most incorrect information i've ever posted on this board

wow, now i can't imagine i have a chance at all...I'm still going to try my best though!

Have you tried contacting your regional director directly and letting them know any new stuff.

I don't think the regional directors are the ones you are supposed to contact now. Just send everything straight to the admissions office, and you will be fine.
