I suppose it's not possible to sign up for two sections of the same class? So what is the best way to have a chance at my first choice (probably waitlisted), but the security of knowing I'll get to take the course at all (by reserving a sure seat in an open section).
Thanks!

How many people are on the waitlist? What class is it? How many seats are in the class?

More spots will open up as normal registration times come. Or it should.

will more spots open up?
some classes already have more spaces today than yesterday, so I think that all the classes opened up already

ucsandiego915: Well I am most concerned about Math10B and Chem 6, lecture and discussion. I like the advice about the 10% drop rate but what if that does not happen? I would rather not cut it too close.
Right now chem discussions with 35 seats may have a waitlist of 4 to 9 or could be wide open, full or close to it. Math is variable too. I don’t know if these numbers mean anything if spots open at freshmen registration.

Math and Chem definitely will open up more spots, although I’m not positive if they open them all at the beginning of the week or if they do it gradually throughout the week. My guess would be the former.

The 10% waitlist rule will likely not fail you haha. I have gotten into every class I’ve waitlisted, although the farthest up I’ve been is #11.
ETA: if you want to take Chem with Johnson, this is the one exception I can think of. She is super popular so I remember last year the waitlist barely moved.

The strategy of signing up for classes with the intention of dropping them later adds a weird variable to the scheduling system. On the one hand it takes up spaces that then are not available to other students but on the other, if you drop them soon enough, it could open spaces for people on the waiting list. It reminds me of the reason for traffic jams. When drivers are so concerned about getting ahead of traffic merging in, they shorten their following distance to make it hard for merging traffc to maintain speed and then all following cars have to reduce speed to accommodate the slower merging traffic. Eventually it all comes to a standstill.

Any thoughts about Psych 1, full at 280, waitlist 15? or Public speaking? All sections of 18 waitlist mostly 2.

how about Chem 6A with Johnson? Right now it’s 35 limit and 13 available… do i have a chance if my registration is tomorrow 1pm?

@ nan2: I would definitely waitlist those. Good chance of getting in.

@wowcan’twait: Wait until an hour before your time to see if those 13 spots are still available.

Poli 30 has waitlists between 4 and 8. Should I enroll in my backup class since the only people taking this class are poli sci majors and they’re not likely to drop a core class?

Also, I’m waitlist position 2 on on intro to logic. That should be fine, right?

so all the johnson’s chem 6A is waitlisted… 3-6 waitlists… by the time i enroll (1pm)… it’ll probably increase… should i go for the waitlist or go with another professor…? Stuart or Czworkowski?

um… the Math 10A class that I wanted shows only 4 spots available, and my enrollment time is tomorrow afternoon :. should I do a backup or will more spots open up? there is another section with 26 spots available at the moment…

thanks for any replies :)

@droobles, are you looking at Math10A with Stevens?

Do all the other times conflict with your schedule?

yes rameez, that’s what I’m looking at. fortunately, Volpato’s class works with my schedule.

^ Volpato is a good professor from what I’ve read. =]

@ SleeplessonCC - both of those classes should be fine to waitlist. Between 2-8 people is fiiiiine, especially in the PHIL and POLI departments.

Wow, CSE 91 seminar is full with 60 people in the waitlist… Shouldn’t they make more room since all the CS majors take that class?

@rameezkhan- thank you : )

wowcan’twait: what did you decide about chem? I picked another section because of the suggestion that johnson’s wait list does not change much.
