^that’s another way of looking at it.

Since it’s been a full three days since the last post (oh, so long, I know), I was wondering if anyone has heard from/talked to Columbia? The last post about THIS year’s wait list (and not the more-qualified/less-qualified debate) was almost two weeks ago…

My friend recently (as in yesterday) got off MIT’s extended wait list. And it seems as though H & P (and other “better”–and I by no means actually believe this label–schools) have used their wait lists too. What are the chances of the “summer melt” hitting us hopefuls?

crosses fingers

This is ridiculous. Not all admitted students are equally qualified (“qualified” including all the intangible / unquantifiable factors). If Columbia admits 1500 people, it’s not as if there just happens to be 1500 qualified people. 1500 is an arbitrary cutoff and lines need to be drawn in the sand somewhere. I highly doubt there’s much of a difference between the “last” 25 kids who get admitted and the “best” 25 kids on the waitlist.

ridiculous how top schools like harvard/stanford use their waitlist more than cornell!
(btw, i’m on the cornell WL…)

what about the last 200 kids who get admitted and the best 200 kids on the waitlist? You seem to be ignoring the continuous spectrum aspect of qualifications. I never said the difference was substantial, but you do end up with a marginally less qualified (under my broad definition) class if you take in fewer kids RD and put tons on the waitlist.

You’re making a straw man – there are never going to be 200 kids accepted off CU’s waitlist. Maybe 40-50ish in a bad year. I completely agree that the qualifications thing is a continuous spectrum.

Hello, it’s been more than a week and we’re almost half way through June. Any news from anyone?

Just curious if Columbia ever used its extended waitlists for undergrads this year? My daughter was on it but then released, and is very happy with where she is going in the fall, so it doesn’t matter at this point, but it would be interesting to know if anyone was taken off the Columbia waitlist for the entering class this fall.

Missing the “brilliant” response to the above post - where someone worried about posting something similar to the above in the future. Wonder whether too many folks took up the offer or maybe even volunteered not to wait all those years! Hmmmm - post seems to have vanished.
