I am kind of changing my mind about expedited decisions. I have loved seeing students on this thread getting accepted, but there IS risk with asking for an early decision.
We have a parents Zoom session tomorrow with UCF Admissions and Orientation, and I am going to ask them about the odds. If they answer my question, I will report back, but I don’t know that there is any definitive answer at this point.
What I do know is that 2020 is certainly NOT a normal year, so past years’ experience is of limited value. Universities all over the country are very anxious about what the Fall will look like – whether they will be open or not, whether they will have students or not…AND what the financial implications for their school are.
The financial problems for universities in lockdown are enormous. No dorm revenue, no activities revenue, no revenue from food plans or food outlets on campus. If you look at your expected annual college expense and subtract your tuition, that is roughly what the school is losing on each student if they are operating online-only.
From an admissions perspective, if someone in a family loses their job or has their income reduced, that family must make an adjustment. Not a little adjustment, they need to make a BIG adjustment and they need to do it quick. Many families will have little choice but to keep their student home in a local school, rather than sending them away to school. That reduces enrollment, and schools are already seeing reductions in enrollment.
Reduced enrollment at UCF means openings at UCF, which means picking people up off the waitlist.
So here’s my advice. If you REALLY NEED to know whether you are attending UCF because another acceptance is pending – request expedited decision.
But if you CAN wait, I would wait. It seems to me, with all the uncertainty around enrollment and the accompanying financial impact on universities, that the odds of acceptance off the waitlist get better and better after May 1.
I know the waiting is driving y’all nuts, but try to keep things in perspective.
