Waitlist

Stumper, i didn't mean to condemn UVA in general, but its admissions committee definitely needs to be taught some manners. for the record, i really wouldn't have been upset if they had waitlisted me without having sent me that "likely" letter (i was waitlisted at washu, too, but they never sent me any type of likely). if they really thought i was going to attend another school, why talk about how "impressive" my application and academic record are, only to later go, "well, i guess we did say that, but you still have to spend up to $500 of deposit at another school if we decide to take you off the waitlist...". likelies aren't supposed to be sent out all willy nilly. so yes, uva adcom sucks major ass.

Wahoo, you crack me up with this statement...

"In many cases UVa uses the waitlist as a sort courtesy to legacies. Obviously, UVa knows that they are never going to use anywhere near those 3000 people but it is something nice that they can do for students who were close to getting in."

both my childern have been waitlisted and we (parents) never went there. Also, who did you talk to in the admissions office that gave you this idea ? Oh Mr. No-one I believe. give your perspective on student life, not admissions process please.
I'd like to know.

i think its reasonable what wahoo says actually.

Stumper, I sure hope that looking at the other schools an applicant applied to to get a feel for whether or not an applicant is likely to attend is hogwash. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. "Hey, they applied to three in-state(not Va) schools in the same general area. They're all pretty good schools, too. We'd better not accept them and waste an admit spot; they're not likely to want to go here." Please, someone offer proof to show UVa adcoms are not that slimy.

bbpilot,
I have talked to two admissions officers at UVa and a woman in the Alumni Association whose job it is to advocate for legacy applicants. All three mentioned to me what they refer to as "courtesy waitlists." Both my parents went to UVa and I we still live in Charlottesville so it was easy for me to go and talk to these people, who essentially told me that I had received the "courtesy waitlist." That is why I went to Tech for a year and the transfered to UVa.

Remeber, I didn't say they only use the waitlist for this, but it was my experience that this is one of the uses.

Wahoo, once again your message...

A lot of times they use it so that they can essentially reject legacies without making their donating, alumni parents too mad.

Crichessill, go to VA Tech, great school for you if you want Engineering...

Littleol'me, good luck, USNA is a great place also.

bbpilot1, I'm not sure that I understand your point in the last post. I told you were I got that idea. Obviously you disagree with my statement, but on what grounds?

bbpilot- I think I've decided on NROTC at UCLA. USNA just doesn't have what I want(I'm a freak, I know).

The courtesy waitlist makes sense, but I think I'd have preferred a flat out rejection. I'm not a legacy, but UVa's version of the waitlist pulls at that part of my mind annoyed by polical correctness and arrogance.

Littleol'me,

The competition is fierce among institutions for the top students. What I spoke about might explain why someone with perfect stats might get rejected by UVa if the adcom knows this person applied to, and is likely to get in at, say Harvard.

I'm sorry if this little fact rocked your world. It's not my assertion that UVa practices this as a policy, but they do have to compete for the best students. Although, I'm certain the likelyhood of an applicant accepting an offer is taken into consideration. With a limited number of slots available, adcoms must consider who is the best fit, w/o needlessly placing others on the "waiting list," and potentially losing top students.

Think about it.

hi, guys, legacy is a factor in every school basicly. so it would be considered in the waiting list more does make sense. and littleolme, i agree w/ u about the Stumper statement. it's not likely they would do that, cuz it's gonna raise a lot issues... and by the way, they don't ask us about where u sent ur application in most schools!

Stumper,

I am not against the "wait list" only at UVa, I am against it at every university.

It against my nature to concede. However, I will in this case because my personal opinion of the "wait list" may make others on it feel badly, and I don't want them to feel bad. Revel in your victory over one who rarely gives in without a fight.

wait list is created in favor of the universities... i am sorry littleolme......

why sorry?

I'm just sorry that I'll never get that 15 minutes of my life back...

it took you 15 minutes? sorry...

I'm amazed at the stats of those waitlisted and can't believe you weren't accepted. Would love to know what your
intended majors are. My son was admitted out-of-state with a class rank of
1/445 but only a 1290 SAT.

I think sometimes we forget it's not all about the numbers.... everyone who applies to UVA obviously has decent stats... they have to look beyond that to decide if you're what their looking for at UVA
