These may seem like stupid q's, but Ive never been on waitlist before

If no one drops, what happens? Does the prof eliminate the WL?
Can you still be in the class if you are on the WL? I remember a bunch of students sitting on the floor in my math class because it was over enrolled.
Should I have a backup ready? USRA won't let me choose classes that overlap, even if they are waitlisted :( :l
If the WL does get removed and I fall under the 12 credit min, will i be royaly screwed?
Why does ucla have so many students?

depends on the class, some classes are really strict on number of enrollments (chem lab, english comp 3) and some are not (huge lectures such as chem or math)… talk to the professor about it and see, you need to get into the class by end of 2nd week so you can’t wait for people to drop after midterms, but i would just pick up another class just in case, if you get in from the waitlist then just drop it

D went to Murphy Hall and asked about the wait list and they said if your were not added off the wait list by the end of the second week then you are automatically dropped. You might check on line or go ask at Murphy yourself. What kick said is accurate. If you are REALLY in need of the class for graduation etc., you can get some kind of number (starts with a P, I think-look on-line it says) from the department or professor that will admit you.

but just email the professor now asking what their policy is on waitlists, some classes usually let everyone in, others let none it, so it just depends

Just a quick check…
math classes (31b) usually let everyone in correct? Im currently number 5 on the waitlist (section), clas enroll is 180 with 30 person wtlst?

I notice that even classes that close early and are difficult to get into, assuming that that they’re large, often have waitlist spots that open up as people adjust their schedules. You can check it occasionally in your free time, and if the opportunity presents itself, quickly put your name in hoping to enroll after drops or via PTE in the first two weeks. Check departmental policies on PTE numbers, though. Or email the instructor and ask if he/she EVER plans to admit from the waitlist (not necessarily now but at some point in the future).

Even though waitlists are dropped after week two, you can also apparently add a course in week three as long as you have been attending, are able to obtain a PTE number, and are willing to pay a fee.
