Waitlisted at Exeter vs. other schools

This year, seems there were many more applicants, so I'm told.

Chances of making it off the waitlist, WITH financial aid? If there's no FA, there's no chance regardless.

Got a handful of other acceptance letters, also, with FA. Because of the FA I'm afraid I'll have to choose one of them, which are all great, but Exeter is THE top choice. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush I've been told.. but still.

Amongst the many "good letters", top two would be Lawrenceville or Choate (struggling with choosing over those too).

Any suggestions?

be thankful for what you have

Go with lawrencville or Choate...their very good schools.

if you've already gotten accepted at some of your other schools, i would just go with them instead of just waiting around on the waitlist. it's not likely that people get off

catg... don't get me wrong. We are very grateful for the acceptances! Just wanted to know how realistic it would be to actively pursue Exeter, which was the first choice.
We want to do the right thing and decline those that we will not choose, so that those spots open up.

Thank you for the responses.. more feedback would be great.

Remember that Exeter is not going to accept anyone off of the wait list until after (likely well after) April 10 -- by which time you will have needed to reserve your space at one of the schools you're admitted to. It would only make sense to pursue the wait list option at Exeter if you're willing to forfeit your deposit at whichever school you choose to accept.

I suggest 3 steps:
1. Stay on the Exeter wait list and hope a spot w/FA opens up
2. Go to revisits at those schools where you were accepted w/FA and fall in love with one
3. Remove yourself from Exeter's waitlist

Thanks creative1, good advice.

I'd thought about this too. Being a TSO school, I would think that one school knows what the other is doing?? If getting off the waitlist and getting FA works, you just tell the first school you're going somewhere else?

I know it sounds like an obvious question, just wondering how "they" feel about people doing that.

I don't think it's that simple though. I remember reading that once you send in your contract they can make you pay the school fees for the whole school year. But if your rich like that then...

Er.. not rich like that - did get FA, however ~ BUT I will be carefully reading any and all documentation prior to moving forward. Thanks for the heads up though.

lawrencville

I would let Exeter go and decide whether you love Choate or Lawrencville more. Unless, of course, there is some compelling reason why Exeter is THAT much a better choice. It's not like you're choosing between a waitlist at Princeton and community college. Choate and Lawrencville are every bit as "good" as Exeter and for many kids, even better. You might want to PM Saer. She was excepted at both Exeter and Choate and didn't give a second's thought to declining Exeter's offer.

Wow. That is great! After obsessing about this all day, my daughter says, exactly what you said! Isn't that something? I would do anything to help her go for what she intended, but now the phrase returns : a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush: and she is looking at the upside of the other acceptances.

Personally, it'd be nice to have her closer to home, but I would not say that to her, it is not truly a part of the equation. I just want her to be happy and successful where she finally chooses.... that's the main thing!

Perspective.
