I applied to 25
plus a couple that I didn’t send official test scores to and didn’t want to pay for them so I just withdrew

I’ll have to agree that this whole process is random… I got accepted to NU but was rejected by UC Berkeley and waitlisted by UVA… maybe it’s because I’m out of state, but I really didn’t expect to be accepted to NU and not UVA…

Accepted:
Berkeley
NYU-Stern
UCLA
Colgate
Wesleyan

Waitlisted:
University of Chicago

Denied:
Northwestern University

Now I’m very confused where to go. Any suggestions?

If you are on the waitlist, and cost is not your prime concern- you may get in… My son was accepted, but I’m guessing the amount of financial help offered still wont put NU within our affordability- I’m guessing there are a lot of others in our position. I think there are only two ways in financially…you are either considered a sob-story- or you are wealthy enough not to care…as in many walks…those in the middle get squeezed out

Rejected and yes, shocked. I’m an international applying for fin aid, so the odds were against me, but I still thought I had a good shot considering NU kept on emailing me about how my interests could be met at the school which convinced me to apply. Plus I got a likely from Columbia.
Not quite sure what went wrong. Maybe my interview…?

My older son attended Northwestern. So my younger son (with a better GPA and SAT stats than older brother) applied and his counselor considered NU a target. We were disappointed to be wait listed but I believe NU is significantly more competitive than it was 5 years ago.
Congrats to those of you fortunate enough to get an acceptance and good luck to everyone else.

Denied: I was somewhat surprised but like some people have said, the whole college admissions process is unpredictable to say the least. I know all of my credentials were on par with Northwestern’s expectations but ultimately I think my supplement wasn’t strong enough to make me stand out from other qualified applicants. Northwestern wasn’t necessarily a top choice for me but I still would have enjoyed the option, but I’m fine with it being my first denial. Congrats to those who were accepted and best of luck to everyone with their other applications.

Accepted:
Boston College - Honors Program
University of Virginia
Wesleyan

Waitlisted:
Washington University in St. Louis

Denied:
Northwestern

I honestly didn’t see my waitlist coming. I’m thoroughly surprised; I mean I have perfect test scores and grades, along with great involvement in a buttload of xc’s, so I don’t understand why they would waitlist me. Especially after visiting the campus 11 hrs away and writing a fairly specific supp. essay. My goal was to get into HPME, but I didn’t, so Northwestern was out of the running anyway. But I still feel insulted, so screw NU

I loved NU, but I’m glad I didn’t have my heart 100% set on it because I ended up getting rejected. This whole college application process is what it is. Life will move on.

I’ve only heard back from 1 other school besides NU and I applied to 8 total, so I guess I’ll just have to wait.

Waitlisted, and I’m genuinely surprised.
Maybe it’s because I was asked to sign up for the ISP and didn’t, thus showing my “lack of interest”?

Accepted:

UC Berkeley
UCLA
U Michigan
Case Western
Boston U

Waitlisted:

Northwestern
Caltech

Rejected:

MIT (EA Deferred)

Decisions yet to come:
<ivies>
Carnegie Mellon
Stanford</ivies>

jasonwho, I don’t think the lack of an ISP application was the determining factor.

I know a senior from my son’s (he’s in ISP) HS who was accepted into NU (McCormick.) He wasn’t interested in ISP so he didn’t apply. He was also accepted at Michigan, denied at MIT and I’m not sure of his status at Purdue and CMU.

I would have to concur with this as well. My son also received the ISP offer and declined to apply and was still accepted to Weinberg. It’s not for everyone.

I applied to ISP and I was waitlisted to NU Weinberg. I don’t know what happens if I do get into ISP since admissions are separate. I suppose they won’t make a decision on me unless I get accepted later… hopefully they’re not SO separate that they don’t even tell them who gets in or not >.<

I feel really bad right about now.
I’m fairly certain I’m not going to be going to Northwestern and after reading these posts about people who cried over getting denied or waitlisted I honestly wish I could give you my spot.

I just can’t afford the huge pricetag of NU, especially since they don’t give out merit aid.

edit:speaking of aid does anyone know generous the NU financial aid is? my family’s income is around 50-60 a year before taxes and I have one sibling in college as well.

You will know that answer in a few days if you were accepted. You should be able to access it on Caesar Thursday according to their web site.

Waitlisted. Not that surprised, I never visited or had much emotional investment in the school… wrote the essay the day that apps were due in. I applied to UChicago and Northwestern hoping I’d be admitted to at least one. I’ll most likely be going to UChicago next year.

Accepted:
UChicago
Reed College
Boston College
University of Florida
FSU

Waitlisted: Northwestern

Rejected: Nowhere (yet)

Waiting for: Brown, Stanford

So I was waitlisted, but I’m positive that I won’t be attending Northwestern. I was going to add my name to the waitlist just to see if I would get in, but I decided that I’m going to leave that spot for someone that’s actually counting on it.

^ Thank you for your kindness.

I feel like that’s pretty much what happened to me. I had around a 3.8 or 3.9 unweighted GPA (the corresponding 4.3 weighted put me squarely in the top 5% of an elite public high school) and 2380 SAT, plus an app built around one outstanding extracurricular. I was waitlisted at Northwestern, but I really do want to go to the point where I’m probably gonna turn down Cornell if I get in.

My statement was pretty much garbage, didn’t have anywhere near the flow my writing normally does. My Common App essay may have screwed me over as well, since I wrote it and used the phrase “the elite schools of the US” a couple of times. They may have put those two side-by-side and decided I wasn’t serious.
Trouble is, I really am.

To that end, I’m taking several steps to stress a high interest in Northwestern. Hopefully this rectifies the glaring flaw and I get off the waitlist… thoughts on whether I should even bother?

That’s… pretty detailed, LakerFan. Hahaha

Anyway, hopefully this isn’t one of those years NU takes a mere handful of people off the waitlist. I sent the requisite communications stressing it’s my first choice and following those up with a guidance counselor phone call, now I’m just sitting tight. I really like Tufts but NU was always my number one.

Good luck, everyone!
