Waitlisted/Denied?

@Math
Sorry if this is off topic but what rumor about Pomona were you talking about?

I got rejected.
My stats are pretty good, so I was completely shocked.

SAT 1: 2010
SAT 2: 680/680
gpa: 3.97
rank: 3
Diversity: Check, Check
Clubs: Im president of like everything, and have formed my own youth-led green organization!

Where’d I go wrong?
Northwestern is my second rejection and I’ve lost hope for any Ivy League acceptance.

i got waitlisted! does anyone know when the waitlist card will come? some college articles say that some universities track response time for waitlistees, but I’m an international student! Should I just email the school right now to tell them NU is my top choice?

I thought Apr 1 would bring me closure but I was really blindsided by this waitlist.

Rejected and pretty much completely devastated. I reeeaaally wanted to go to Northwestern and I thought I had a shot :frowning: 4.5 and 2220 and I was an internationally ranked martial artist and instructor plus leadership positions in cross country, track, debate, other organizations and a bunch of community service

Accepted:
UCLA
USC
UCB
UCSD
UC Davis
UCSB

Rejected:
Rice
Northwestern :(

Rejected as well. I’m not surprised as I had a terrible freshman year, but I thought my grade trend and essay would give me a chance. It’s just kind of sad that all the work I put into my application was for basically nothing.
Well, now I guess I just have to wait for the rest of my decisions! :)

@futurepresident

chill — wasn’t trying to bash anybody. im talking about a FEW SPECIFIC EXAMPLES of kids from my school that got in cuz of random stuff and there are others that should have gotten in over them. im not even talking about myself necessarily, the waitlist wasnt a HUGE surprise - there are a few other kids in my school. obviously most of the admitted deserved to get in and rightly so, there are just some outliers who got in cuz of connections, etc. so before you start accusing me of bashing, try and understand where im coming from

Waitlisted. Sucks!!! Accepted at WUSTL, waiting on everything else. Ugh sucks sucks sucks!

waitlisted- surprising, as my counselor considered Northwestern a highly probably acceptance. not good… by the way, are northwestern one of those schools (like WUSTL (which I didn’t apply to)) that values you demonstrating interest in the university, or that practices yield protection (like Tufts)?

^ I think NU will consider/gauge interest as a factor in admissions like most schools but do not believe it is determinative. A look through all of the ED and RD decision results indicates many applicants were accepted without a visit or interview. But, I would certainly recommend any serious applicant should demonstrate interest.

I have not seen it often suggested that NU is practicing yield protection. It is, however, often argued that essay responses, EC’s, and recs are particularly heavily weighted and would account for the acceptances not being summarily decided only by SAT scores and GPA. This is a holistic, and fairly common, approach to admissions typical of very elite schools.

I believe it may be more useful to look at the staggering numbers of qualified applicants (30,500+) or one’s “Why NU?” essay responses (often described as most heavily weighted), common ap essays, EC’s etc. as a more likely culprit for a negative admissions outcome rather then “Tufts” syndrome.

^thanks- come to think of it, the “why NU” essay was quite generic and thus probably disadvantageous (though the ECs and Common App essay were certainly good, especially for an international student such as myself)

Waitlisted. I wasn’t that surprised – I was a pretty average applicant so I thought it could go either way (accepted or rejected). I guess I got stuck in the middle… again. haha. I’ve definitely lost almost all my hope of getting into any of the other universities I applied to though!

Rejected. Meh my first rejectino
Accepted:
UCLA
UCSD
UC Berkeley
UCSB
UCI
USC

Waitlisted:
Rice
Claremont McKenna

Rejected:
Northwestern

I don’t know… Maybe I’ll just go to Berkeley :)

Waitlisted. I think I underestimated NW’s difficulty not gonna lie. I saw the results this year and now I understand the decision. So not surprised? I guess…

Waiting on Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia. Not looking hopeful at all

I got a likely at Cornell (for the Tanner Dean’s Scholar), but waitlisted at Northwestern. How does that work?

My “Why NU” essay was extremely good. Yes, a little long–but extremely enthusiastic and informative, I wrote about how I’ve been researching the MMSS program since junior year and how it was a perfect fit and how NU perfectly fits with how I’ve developed as a person and intellectually.

I was denied and was very surprised and extremely heartbroken. It was my top choice and I feel like I communicated that to them well. I go to a prestigious private school in Nashville, and only 1 out of 9 people got in. And everyone that applied was highly if not over qualified.
My stats are: 3.7 unweighted and a 33 on the ACT. I got a 710 US History and a 760 Math I. I’m a 3 sport athlete and captain of 2 of those teams this year. I founded two active clubs at my school and feel like I had really strong essays.
So far:

Accepted-
Tulane
Syracuse
Miami of Ohio
Indiana
Colorado Boulder

Waitlisted:
Washington University of St. Louis

Denied:
Northwestern

Waitlisted. A little surprised because I’m qualified and demonstrated a ton of interest. But with over 30k applicants you can never know what to expect.

Accepted: WashU, UNC, UMich, BC Honors, and Notre Dame
Waitlisted: Northwestern
Rejected: None yet
Waiting on: Duke (deferred ED), Georgetown, Vandy, Penn, Cornell, Emory, and Tufts

Wow guys, looking through this thread, the college admissions process actually seems completely random. Seriously, don’t be sad/feel worthless if you got into other amazing colleges (like Wash U, Berkeley, U Chicago, Rice, etc which are all amazing – at the same caliber/prestige, if not higher, than NW). I got into NW and Rice, but got waitlisted at Wash U and U Chicago (and I was deferred originally from U Mich Rolling Admissions - got accepted two days ago). I was so depressed and felt like I had worked hard all 4 years to only have gotten into my safeties and waitlisted at my targets. I had no hope for my remaining schools - Rice, NW, Brown and Dartmouth (last 2 still pending). But then good news came from Rice and NW which were reaches/possibilities for me. I’m actually convinced now that this whole process is absolutely unpredictable and random. Just posting here to show the people who are sad that I was devastated over being WL’d at schools you guys got accepted into.

Waitlisted too.
I’m not feeling very confident about next week… I might get 9 rejections in a row. =(

ACCEPTED:
Pomona College (Top!)
USC (Top!)
UCLA
UCD
UCSD
UCB (Spring admit)
Wesleyan
Whitman
Willamette
Drexel
UNH

WAITLISTED:
Kenyon
CMC
Pitzer
Vassar (bottom)

REJECTED:
Northwestern (bottom)

No real interest to go and I got into 2/3 of my top choices (waiting on Brown)
We’ll see what happens with the Ivies on Wed!

@dulcecab13: Wow how many colleges did you apply to? I applied to 15 in total and I thought that was a lot…
