Waitlisted...Help!!

I have a 3.9 average but i got a 20 on the ACTs. IUB is my first choice and i was planning on writing them an letter stating how much IUB means to me and maybe going for an interview. Will this help my chances? Could you also list things i could do to increase my chances of getting in?

I’m not sure what the letter could do because it could decrease your chances if it makes you look desperate or it could help if they think that you truly love the school and that its important to you. I’d say it probably won’t hurt so write it, but this is just my perspective as a future freshman. As for the interview, I had no idea they do them, but if they do, do it if you interview well.

Another thing that can help if your grades are good your senior year, send your transcript from first semester (if your school didn’t already, and if they did, send your third quarter grades if you can) Although, you’ve established yourself as somebody who gets great grades already so I don’t know how much that can help. And don’t do it if your grades this year have been well below your average. It’s up for you to decide whether it would help or not. I know it probably helped me get me into one of my other schools and onto the waitlist at another

The biggest issue you face is the ACT score. It’s below the 25% mark for IU, and it’s too late to do anything about that. IU does not generally offer interviews. If you are going to write a letter it should express your interest in IU, but the bulk of the letter should be factual. Has your class rank gone up this year? IU is big on rank. How about your GPA? Did you take the SAT and was it better? Would you be willing to take it in May?

You really should get someone from your school - guidance counselor plus teacher in subject you did really well in or one who knows you well, to write a letter to IU - in addition to your own letter. (College counseling office at your school should really help you try to get in - let them know your situation) SAT scores? extracurricular activities?? You need to really show IU you would be an asset to their community. Good Luck!
