Whats your feeling on the waitlists this year? My D was waitlisted at 5 schools. and found out from 4 that either they didnt take anyone or only a handfull. The last one said they ony anticipate a few openings, and that after everyone goes through orientation. Also many of her friends (all females) were waitlisted at their top choices, and noone seemed to have got in anywhere from a waitlist. In her school I only heard of one girl who got off of a waitlist. It seems last yr, many more people seemed to be getting off of waitlists. It doesnt seem fair to waitlist so many kids, when there really are no openings.

The Colleges are just using the Wait Lists to "Top Off" their Classes.

If they get enough students from the Initial round of Acceptances, they can't go to the wait lists. (Due to Limits on Dorm Space and Class Size.)

This article from Bowdoin College indicates that they received 483 students from their May 1st decisions. Since Bowdoin's target class size was 480, they are not likely to make much use of the waitlist, if they go to it at all.
<a href="http://www.bowdoin.edu/news/archives/1bowdoincampus/002020.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.bowdoin.edu/news/archives/1bowdoincampus/002020.shtml</a></p>

As you point out, a really large number of applicants are wait listed, relative to the number that may get accepted off the wait list.

For an applicant the only reasonable thing to do is get excited about the college you did get accepted to and submitted your deposit to.

If a Wait List acceptance comes thru later it should be greeted as a welcome suprise, not something you are counting on.

For students starting the admissions process, be sure that you have realistic "Safety" and "Match" schools amoung of your list of Schools you apply to.
Those applications require and deserve as much effort as you put into your "Reach" Applications. The Safety and Match Schools should be chosen very carefully, since you very well may end up attending one of them.

My 2nd S, didn't, IMO, put enough effort into his Match applications or his contact with the Colleges to demonstrate his interest. The result 4 waitlists and No admission offers off the wait list. (But he didn't do anything more than send back the card to stay on the wait list.)

He will be entering has Senior year at a LAC in the Fall, that our HS GC had suggested he apply to. That College was looking to get more students from our area and the AdCom liked one of his EC's; but even then she called him to find out why he hadn't visited the campus and would he really come if admitted. He's happy there and doing well. We think it may have been the best place for him after all, but we could have just as easily not been that lucky.

okay, so i havent really followed this thread, but i was placed on five waitlists and got accepted to zero of them... so statistical chances of getting in are well... even lower than i thought. blagh.

Many admissions officers say they regret having to disappoint so many applicants. One reason top schools said they expanded their wait lists this year was that the pool of applicants was so highly qualified. The University of Pennsylvania offered about 1,200 students a spot on its list compared with 1,100 last year. Johns Hopkins had increased its offers by 500 students, to 2,000. Dartmouth also offered 100 more students a spot on its list than the year before. "These are all students you'd love to be able to accommodate," says Karl Furstenberg, admissions dean at Dartmouth, which admitted only 22 wait-listed students, compared with 31 last year.

Good news for next year's wait list.
Selective schools expected to offer
admissions to more students from
next years wait list. The bad news is
that the two phrases.... next year &
wait list are synonymous with 2nd best.
