Waitlisted

I'm sitting with my friend Sam here and she would like to know approximately how many people are offered spots off the waitlist each year. Is there anything she can do to increase her chances?

thanks

I'm wait listed, but I was offered the Summer Session, to which I will definitely be attending. I don't feel like playing Russian Roulette with my future, and I'm glad enough to get in in some rudimentary form!

Can you elaborate on the Summer Session? Sam was also offered this option.

Okay...there was a pretty explanatory brochure that came along with the "acceptance" packet...

I don't know how many people are offered spots from the wait list pool each year. However, judging by the letter, few people get in from the wait list pool and it's much more difficult to gain acceptance in the Waitlist pool than the normal pool.

If you REALLY want to attend GaTech, the best option by far is to accept the Freshman Summer Session (FSS) and a spot on the wait list. Here's how that works: You're accepted to FSS already. After May 1, you get accepted or rejected for FALL 2006 from the WAITLIST pool.

Accepted to FALL 2006 from Waitlist:
Congrats! Your summer is free, and show up at Tech on 21 August for class.

Rejected to FALL 2006 from Waitlist:
Well, it's not the end of the world. You go to FASET on 16 June, and take a 6 week class. And then you enrol in Fall like any ordinary student. The maximum number of credit hours you can take in FSS is 8- not a lot really. And HOPE covers tuition. Romm&Board is 1,000 if you opt to take it. IF YOU GO TO FSS, YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY IN GA TECH FOR FALL 2006!

Hope that clarifies things. The brochure and letter are much more reliable and detailed than this post, but that's the gist of it.

So Sam is definitely in Tech and she can attended GaTech in Fall if she goes to FSS.

C2 of the Common Data Set for GA Tech:

C2. Freshman wait-listed students (students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability)

Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? yes

If yes, please answer the questions below for fall 2005 admissions:

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 426

Number accepting a place on the waiting list 208

Number of wait-listed students admitted 102

Is your waiting list ranked? No

If yes, do you release that information to students?

Do you release that information to school counselors?

So, approximately 49% take a position on the waitlist, and of those, about 49% are admitted. So, it's a good chance.

Yea, but that's for last year. This is the first year they've had FSS, so those numbers probably won't be the same. This year, if you're wait listed, you're in if you're willing to give up your summer for Tech.

Which many people will be willing to do.

Well, the numbers won't change drastically.

Thanks for the responses.
