How does it actually work?...Do they look at everyone's file again and then read the letter? Or does the letter's importance overweigh the rest of the file, i.e. the applicant's records got him/her onto the waitlist and now only the letter distinguishes him/her from the rest??

Columbia waitlists a lot of people, yes, I remember the number being somewhere around 1000, with them accepting around 50 I think

anyone hear anything yet?

do you think they'll mind if I send in my fourth quarter progress report?

^I don't see why not, I sent my last report card. Even though they say they only want one page, I doubt they'll penalize you for something like that.

anyone here got in after bein waitlisted? do you think anyone hears before june??

people first started being notified around 5/19 last year, though I do recall hearing acceptances after that date (I suppose if accepted waitlistees decline, they do a second round).

The second round also includes the spots left by people who "un-enroll" because they were taken off the waitlist at another school. So, for instance, if a person puts her deposit down at Columbia but is admitted off the waitlist at Yale and chooses to go to Yale, the spot she leaves open at Columbia must be filled with a person off the Columbia waitlist. (Hope that makes sense.)

well, i was accepted RD and i'm not sure how this works, but i got an e-mail telling me today spots in the freshman class were full (at least for FU foundation) - i turned down columbia for ucla =[ not sure if i made the right choice, hopefully spots will open on the waitlisted

So much for my chances at Fu... :(

why did you turn down columbia for ucla?

well, i'm a california resident so the money was much cheaper. I had the choice of UCSD and Cal, both 'better' for my major. at first, i had really wanted to go to columbia. I even flew over to Days on Campus over my spring break. I did love it there, however my parents were really hesitant to send me out that far. In the end.. i'm not sure if i had 'wanted' Columbia enough to justify spending 48k a year (i get no financial aid at any school)- I do plan on going to grad school, so I traded by going to UCLA and having the 'rents pay for grad school. I chose UCLA because... it was still relatively urban, it was warmer, dorm food is waaay better, and I had a handful of buddies going to UCLA. I admit, public school will be a bit harder, and I do regret giving up Columbia a bit. But who knows, maybe I'll be around in four years. UCSD's social environment seemed a bit isolated - hard to get off campus and Berkeley was too close to home (I live in San Jose .. THE silicon valley).

No offense but i went on Days on Campus and met people who turned down Yale and Harvard for Columbia. So doesn't look too bright.

College is a personal choice. If you liked UCLA better, you made a great decision.

That is because you are not too bright. As said above, and especially when you reach the UCLA/Columbia caliber of schools, personal choice is by far the most important delineator of where you should end up.

has anyone heard anyting yet????

i do'nt see the need to respond to a personal attack. It's not about me because you don't know me. It's about you that ur speaking of.

looks like if they take anyone off CC's waitlist it will be very few very late

how do you figure that?

my college counselor spoke with an alumni who has contact with admissions, they had to send back many late deposits and they only expect to take a very select few off the waitlist for Fu
