I got waitlisted for Math 16a :(. It is a manual waitlist. There is room in a discussion that I wanted but they put me on the waitlist in the discussion because I was waitlisted for the lecture. How will this all work? Do I just wait for the lecture to clear out? How do I increase my chances of getting into the lecutre and off the waitlist? Let's say the lecture has more room because people dropped, can a person who is registering take that spot from me even though I am on the waitlist or do I have priority over them. I know this may seem confusing but someone out there must know what I am talking about :(. How often do the manual waitlist get updated? Do they start taking people off the manual waitlist when school starts or can it happen from right now? If I get off the waitlist, how will I get notified? I know we can't keep logging onto Telebears to check because we have a set amount of log ins. Right now, by position is 27 on the waitlist for a lecture of 490 students. AHHHH, somebody help me, I will love you forever if you can address my concerns :(. Thanks.

bump bump bump bump bump

First bit of advice: Relax!

27 on the waitlist isn’t too bad. By the time class begins, it’ll be quite quick before you move off the waitlist. The manual waitlist just prevents some loophole weirdness from happening.

Show up to class, go to the discussion you want to go to, and before you know it, you will be off the waitlist. Professors also have the option of adding discussion sections and expanding class size, and they will use the option if logistically possible.

In terms of discussion sections, that’ll get sorted out once you’re off the waitlist. Most professors and GSIs don’t care which discussion section you’re in, or that you even consistently attend the same one. In any case, they will probably still hold a “discussion section swap” and manually process students once the lecture worklist has settled.

Second thing: you can check your waitlist status also on BearFacts.

Thanks for answering! So I guess I just have to wait and freak out until school starts since the waitlist wont get resolved until then?

No, the waitlist can be processed at any time. As people get into classes they want more, then drop this one, spaces open up. It is up to the department and professor as to when they will process manual waitlists.
