I am curious about the wake forest social life as well as its surrounding city. I am very concerned it will get boring after a month of being there. Some insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, guess we’re in the same boat. WFU is my number one but I’m seriously scared to do Early Decision because of some students review I’ve read. I hope that if this question get answered it would be a honest reply for 4 years of my life depends on it (to an extent). How does the culture at WFU differs for students who take part in Greek Life compare to those who don’t? Does racism or racial tension exists greatly at the University? For students who do take part in Greek Life (Frat) does hazing exists and how diificult are these activities?

Thanks.

Hey guys. Current student here ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.

Honestly, I would be lying if I said I didn’t have the same fears before I came here. I am not a big party animal, I barely drink for personal reasons, and I was not planning on joining a sorority. But, honestly, I am never bored on campus. The first few weekends can be rough, but once you make a solid group of friends (find one with a car as well, lol) then you can get of campus as much as you like. It’s easy to drive to Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro or the mountains if you want a day trip. The city has plenty of great places to eat and discover. The mall is actually one of my favorite trips because it’s massive. There are a ton of cheap movie theaters in town. And if you aren’t the parting type, there are a number of organizations that you can join to keep you busy over the weekends (I’ve found that Student Union is a great place to meet people and plan weekend activities).

I suppose Greek life and non-Greek life differs, but to be honest, I don’t really have many friends who participate heavily in Greek life so I’ve never noticed a difference. I think the disparities are less intense with girls than with guys. However, you are not barred from frat parties if you aren’t Greek affiliated. You can still have fun with all of your friends and have it not be a problem. It really isn’t as big of a deal, from my experience, as people make it sound.

I would say racial tension exists in certain circumstances to an extent. Some Greek associations are more well known for their racial preferences than others; however, on the majority of the campus race is a non-issue.

From what I have heard through the rumor mill, hazing exists in fraternities. I have never heard anything from sororities on this issue, and I’m not sure to what intensity the fraternity hazing exists. Some people say it isn’t that bad, some say that it is incredibly intense. Depends of the frat, the person involved, and the brothers.

Hope this was honest enough for you guys and I hope this helps. Despite what may sound negative, Wake is a great school and I honestly wouldn’t trade my time here for anything.

Not my thread and you touched upon this a bit, but is Greek life very present on the campus? Like you I don’t want to join in, and while I don’t mind if people do, I don’t want to feel like an overwhelming minority in the social scene

Greek life is a pretty big deal at Wake, but just because your not involved doesn’t mean you can’t go to the events. I am a girl not in a sorority, but basically all of my best friends are. I still go out every single weekend to frat parties with my friends (both greek and non greek). honestly its how you look at the situation, a bunch of my friends used their frat/sorority to meet their best friends but I kinda used not being in a sorority to give me an opportunity through other ways, for me I did a club sport. But I am still friends w the girls on my freshman hall and people I met from different meetings and random events. im from up north and never got the whole sorority thing and didn’t find it for me but I had friends w an unbelievable experience in it, I just found my experience to be just as amazing. Plus the benefit of having a greek school is that many parties are through the frats and not really a huge bar scene which makes it nice so people don’t have to worry about fake ids or any of that crap other schools do. also super easy to go out so if you are unsure if going out is for you, you can always stop by a party for 10 mins and leave.
but if you don’t want to go out theyre are always plenty of students that don’t spend their Saturdays getting drunk at a frat- so many different things to do. and even though the city of Winston-Salem is kinda small I have found some pretty neat finds through out the city.
basically theyre are a ton of people in the greek system and a ton not in it. everyone has a social life, you just gotta find the people who are similar to you (and trust me its pretty easy to do that)

Does the race issue affect more groups than others? I just have been seeing a lot of comments about this. Some groups face this more than others? Can you put names on the frats.
In general terms how does the racial tension impact the students?
