How safe is it to walk to or from Georgia Tech to the midtown Marta station during the day or evening hours?

Son will be traveling from out-of-state and will most likely use Marta to get back and forth from airport and GT. We know there is a trolley service, but was considering walking when he can.

With some of the robberies/crime around campus recently we were not sure if walking was wise. For example, how is the area during the day/early evening?

Also, is there any other transportation system besides Marta which are good safe/economical options?

I do it most days, actually. The trolleys aren’t very regular during the summer and so I just walk. It’s only about 3 blocks from the management building, and so it doesn’t go into any bad areas at all.

As for the crime, the vast majority of it happens west of the interstate. East of it is a very different place.

Perfectly safe during the day. I’ve done it many times.

The area is pretty busy and well lit enough that it’s probably not too bad during the evening either. There are lots of stores/clubs that are open late along Spring street, and they have people coming and going all the time.

From Midtown (N4), he’ll walk past skyscrapers, expensive hotels, new condo buildings, and a grocery store. 3 blocks to the College of Management (and the edge of campus).

From North Avenue (N3), tell him to take the Exit to the AT&T Center (not to Georgia Tech), and walk north on West Peachtree. Going that way, he’ll pass AT&T’s skyscaper, Atlanta Opera’s offices, a bank, and the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta. 2 blocks to the College of Management

Both are equally safe (N3 is a little less populated, and thus dangerous, at night, but there’s usually Atlanta PD in front of the bank).

H walked to campus last week from the North Avenue exit. He’d flown in from Orlando for meeting in the Combustion lab, and it turned out to be about a mile walking, as that building is past campus. He walked in the morning, and he felt very comfortable walking. Didn’t bother him at all. However, he’d forgotten how long the hike would be (lol, especially in July), so he got a ride back to the station later in the day. Too much heat. He’s walked to campus from the Marta several times, but it has always been during the day, and he’s always felt safe.

I agree those are great responses. My son and husband will be at FASET this weekend as well and I told my husband he should take sonnyboy on MARTA to help him get a feel for it. He’ll have to get himself to and from the airport (and to and from Turner Field if he wants to catch some ball games) and he needs to familiarize himself with public transportation.
