Wanting to transfer to Pitt main

I'm currently a freshman in Grove City College studying electrical engineering. There are a few things I don't like about this school and I'd really like to attend the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland. I applied last week. Here are my concerns.

First, one page of their website says they require a 2.5 GPA, but another page says they require a 2.8. Which do you think is right? My first semester GPA from Grove City was a 2.96, which is worrying me. However, my high school transcript is very strong: 3/240 class rank, 3.9 GPA, two AP courses, 5 on one of the exams, SAT score of 1250. So that's good, but that leads to my second concern...

..which is, will they even look at my high school transcript? It says they need it if you have LESS than 24 credits currently. Well, I only have 16 from GCC, however, when you add in my AP credit and college in high school credit, I have 24. Does that mean they'll completely disregard my high school transcript even though I sent it to them?

And finally, here is the essay I wrote:

University of Pittsburgh
Application Essay
February 1, 2006

Imagine you're on the Admissions or Scholarship Committee. Tell us something about yourself that isn't apparent from your academic records--something that will give us insight about you as an individual and might help in the committee's decision.

Application Committee:

First I would like to thank you for taking the time to review my application and to introduce myself. As stated at the top of this page, my name is xxxxxxx. I am from xxxxxx, and am currently a freshman at Grove City College in Grove City, PA, studying electrical engineering. Due to my current situation and background, I feel I can be regarded slightly differently from the normal freshman or transfer student applying to the University of Pittsburgh. Firstly, I am a single child and the first in my family to be attending college. That scenario put particular strain and confusion on all of my college-related decisions, such as which school to attend, what kind of environment I preferred, and what kind of academics with which I wanted to acquaint myself. Due to price and location, I chose Grove City College and entered as a freshman in August of 2005. I began my college experience with a healthy high school background, having taken AP courses in calculus and physics and earning a 5 on the AP calculus exam, obtaining CHEM 0110 credit from the University of Pittsburgh in my junior year, and maintaining a 3.9 GPA and finishing my senior year fourth in my class out of approximately 240 students. The academics at Grove City during my first semester were rigorous but rewarding. However, during my time here I have learned a great deal about myself, the type of college I want to attend, the reputation of the school name I want my degree to bear, and the environment and personality I want my college life to reflect. I quickly realized that Grove City was not matching my attributes and traits. At this time I began seeking education elsewhere and very noticeably became quite fond of the University of Pittsburgh. U. of Pitt. had been a consideration of mine previously, however I neglected to pursue it further due to the slightly higher costs compared to some of my other considerations. Looking back, however, I regret not further considering Pitt due to that reason alone, and after having learned about myself and the college world, every aspect of the University of Pittsburgh and its offerings excite me. These aspects include the city of Oakland and Pittsburgh and their surroundings; the large variety of students to meet and interact with that make up the student body; and most importantly, the reputation that the University of Pittsburgh holds with its high academic standards, especially in the engineering disciplines. I would be very excited to have an opportunity to learn, grow, and further my education with the staff and students of your fine university. Because of these reasons I eagerly seek to transfer this fall and imagine the experience to be very eye-opening and rewarding.

Again I thank you for taking the time to review this essay and my entire application.

Yes, I realize that the essay really focuses on why I want to transfer instead of on me as an individual, however I feel that clearly explaining to the college why I want to attend, now, after already being at another school, is very important.

So what do you think? Do I have good odds or maybe not?

try paragraphs

Yeah paragraphs would be nice. And yeah, tell more about yourself, but don't take away the parts about the school. Just make it longer with more YOU

Well...do you think I'm looking at decent odds of getting in?

Regarding the essay, I think it does answer the question well of who I am as an individual. With my college career, there really isn't that much to say to help explain who I am since I've only been here for one semester. So then I could talk about my high school accomplishments, but at this stage it seems silly to delve back a year into stuff like marching band and other pre-college things. So if I wanted to focus more on myself, really the only things to mention would be what I'm interested in, my work ethic, etc. And honestly they hear those things from everyone everyday. I figured, the admissions committee would probably be pretty interested in WHY I want to transfer in the first place when I'm already in a good school, and that's why I addressed that primarily. I didn't want it to be much longer, even that was an entire page.

What do you think my odds are?

I think you have a good shot! Your essay is very sincere and I think they'll be able to tell that you are really interested in their school! Your GPA is a bit low but its higher than what there web page is (whether its 2.5 or 2.8) so i don't think it matters. You should be fine. Your high school record is great and they will review it because even though you have 24 credits with A.P. most colleges re-evaluate A.P. scores when you transfer since not all schools accpet them. I dont think those will 'automatically' transfer. I think you worry about transfering the A.P. scores over after you are in. I'm not sure but i think so. Either way they should review your high school transcripts if you sent it. Good luck!

Thank you very much!

I hope you're right about them reviewing my high school transcript, I really hope it's considered quite heavily. It should be since I've only been here one semester, right?

The GPA is what really worries me. I'm afraid it's good enough for a branch campus but not for Pitt main. Last year they accepted 836 of 1970 transfer applicants. But, what do you think are the pool of students in that 1970 applicants? A lot of students with GPAs less than mine? Or maybe not too many applying for the school of engineering?

I really didn't think my GPA was that bad. Most of my fellow engineers last semester had between a 2.6 and 3.1 or so. Will they consider very heavily the difficulty of the school I'm coming from? GCC is a good school.

I graduated from Pitt and it seems like the Engineering school loses more people after freshman/sophomore years than gains them. This leads me to believe that you have a pretty good shot at it...

what level math are you up to now? Most of the entering sophomores in the engineering school will be taking either Calc 3 or Diff Eq. To be more competitive, you should be ready for Calc 3 at least by fall.

I highly doubt you'll be shoved to a branch campus...they most definately know that Grove City is a respectable college with intelligent students, especially because it's so close to Pittsburgh...

Good Luck!

Thank you, ophiolite.

What engineering did you do at Pitt? I am in EE at GCC but am applying for CoE at Pitt.

Right now I am taking calc 3 and I got a B in calc 2 last semester, so I should be good in that department.

Actually, I wasn't an engineering major, just had a lot of engineering friends...I graduated with a degree in geology and took a number of classes with engineering students.

Oops...don't know why I read that as you gradated in engineering. Sorry.

Well I know my HS record is strong and I'm coming from a good school, I guess what scares me is my GPA, and the fact that last year they only accepted 42% of their transfer applicants. I'm not sure if that's not a big deal, because maybe most of those aren't engineering applicants, or maybe they get a lot of medicore applications, or, maybe that is something to worry about, because maybe that 42% that get in have very strong GPAs and college records.

Also, do you think it's worth going for an interview? Could that help significantly?

If I got a chance to go into a college for an interview I'd take it so quickly. I have a good personality and I'm handsome, what can I say? You should go in for an interview, definitely.

I definitely want to! Only thing is, I applied Thursday, and sometimes it takes as little as two weeks for them to make their decision. So if they're booked for the immediate future, doesn't really seem possible to do it in time.

Well, I called, and they don't do interviews in any circumstances.

So based on just my app, essay, and two transcripts you think I'm okay? Alright that I don't have any recs? At this point in college there really wasn't anyone to get a rec from.

And...I accidentally put 3/05 for my SAT date instead of 3/04. I sent them an email but they haven't corrected it yet. Does making a mistake like that on your app hurt your chances at all? Just, because, it makes you seem dumb?

Looking to see what anyone else thinks. I really have NO IDEA how hard it is to get accepted as a transfer for Pitt main in engineering. I don't know if my GPA sucks or if it's fine for this.

Bump for the new week.
