My friend's daughter is a junior just beginning her college search. She has about a 3.8 unweighted, and she has good SAT scores ( 700 Cr, 680 M, 720 W) that she plans on improving. She will be a 3-year varsity soccer player on a high school team that has made the state final-4 in 7 of the last 8 years and she plays on a prestigious travel club as well. She is not sure if she wants in college. She has various other leadership positions as well.

She would like to go to a smaller school, preferably in a warm weather area. She is already checking out the Claremont schools and Occidental this spring break. She'd like to check out some schools in the south as well (Rice, Tulane, Emory and Vanderbilt are already on her radar), especially some LACs.

The complication? She is Jewish and keeps kosher. She is somewhat religiously observant.

Any recomendations of southern LACs where keeping kosher wouldn't be a problem?

I really don't think being Jewish and keeping kosher will present a problem at either Rice, Tulane, Emory or Vanderbilt. They all have active Hillels.

Regarding USC. She would be quite close and an easy bus ride to the Fairfax district where she could buy kosher food.
Our neighbor who is a strict vegan has found plenty of food in the cafeteria that meets her needs.
The hard part about Ca is that there aren't that many private schools that a jewish student would attend. Due to good public education most of the privates seem to be religious.
She could look at Chapman and Redlands.

there was a great thread posted last year on Jewish schools (both keeping kosher and the Jewish community). I tried a search, but didn't find it. It had a number of great suggestions -- many of which were probably in warm areas.

You might try reposting with a more descriptive title: "School suggestions: Kosher Food, Warm Climate, good school -- student with good stats"

hopefully someone will find that older posting.

^^ in California, I have a friend who goes there, really likes it
Most of the California schools have a large jewish following. And seeing that I live in AZ, (I also work at the Jewish Community Center here) there's a lot of Jewish groups in Arizona universities, but they are pretty large.

Lots of good ideas and good info here. The claremont schools have a reasonable # of jewish kids attending. USC is another looking to increase its numbers. Rice, Emory, Vandy, Tulane, C of C (Charleston) UGA, UF, and even Clemson have a reasonable jewish representation, where one can probably keep Kosher. Heres a link to a great reference http://reformjudaismmag.org/06fall/ , the Reform Judiasm's college edition. Ithas a ton of info including the top 60 schools Jewish students pick.

Thanks for all of the info ! I'll pass this on to my neighbor. Her daughter really liked Dickinson, Lafayette, Union and Kenyon and is hoping to find something similar in the South but where she can keep kosher too (not that it would be particularly easy at any of the schools except for Kenyon because her mom could bring up meals for her freezer every so often!).

I would suggest she contact a Hillel representative from each of the schools she's considering and asking them her questions about how easy it is to eat kosher on campus.
