Do any of you know the waitlist statistics of Wash U in St.Louis? My son is waitlisted there for 2010 Fall session. Appreciate any response.

Just curious…did your son visit WU before decisions came out?

Wait list at WUSTL is notoriously long every year. And they do not admit in any order: they cherry pick according to needs.

What is that old saw? Something about snowballs in very hot places?

Waitlists are extremely large at every top school. WashU has a notoriously large waitlist most of the years.

No. He did not visit the campus. He has a 4.1 GPA and 2360 SAT score.

That may have had an impact. WUSTL is one of those schools that wants to be shown the love. Also given his high stats he may have been a pre-emptive waitlist; WUSTL is believed (by rumor) to turn down students they think will get into higher ranked schools. So your son, a strong applicant that didn’t show enough interest, may have triggered this.

But there is good news on the flip side of the same coin; if your son really wants WUSTL, he needs to do everything he can to show them he wants WUSTL. They can take anyone they want off the waitlist. The most powerful wedge would be a letter saying that if taken off the waitlist he would enroll. Don’t write a letter like this unless its true! And be sure to take in account all financial aid implications in making the decision to write it. A step down would be an “accomplishment” letter ostensibly sent to let the adcoms know of any awards, etc. received since the app was sent in, and that expresses continuing interest in WUSTL.

Thanks, mikemac. I really appreciate your tip. We will send an “accomplishment” letter and hope for the best.

Might percentage wise be the biggest wait list in the Country. This is a school that out right rejects few.
