Washington D.C. schools

Hello, I am looking at going into foreign relations/diplomacy so D.C. is obviously where I need to be, can you guys give me a little info about the different schools and what makes it different from the rest? Also why you like Gtown better?

thanks alot! v

Georgetown is THE school for foreign relations. The SFS is one of the top programs for international studies in the nation. If that’s what you’re looking for, Georgetown is the school for you.

The Eliot School at GW is also really good… but it’s still no SFS.

AND GEORGETOWN LOOKS LIKE HOGWARTS!

I was really skeptical about Georgetown until I visited. The campus is amazing, the area around it is magnificent. It sold me over to apply. School of Foreign Service (SFS) is a great choice for someone wanting to go into international diplomacy. I understand, however, that in order to transfer in once you’re there, someone must transfer out. Just an extra tidbit for anyone considering an internal transfer.

Georgetown is ranked 5th for international relations, after Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. SFS is really elite.

Thats a dead link :(

thanks. I don’t really buy into those rankings, but I guess it’s something to think about. Can you tell me about the “snobby” factor at Gtown, I heard it’s pretty bad

I’m just a Mom of a high school senior, but we visited the three DC schools. Georgetown did not seem snobby to us, but it did seem just a little more preppy and dressed up than other schools. My son has shoulder length hair and we didn’t see anyone who looked like him while we were there. Our guide was scarily smart and accomplished, but pretty down to earth too. We liked Georgetown, but my son is by no means sure it’s his top choice.

GW is closer to downtown and has very convenient metro connections. My son hated the fact that it has no real campus. It really looks like an office park. It’s one of the view places where students raved about how good the advising was. Like Georgetown they have an interesting list of visiting faculty who are more famous for their lives outside the university.

American is in a much more residential neighborhood. My son felt very comfortable there (grandparents used to live a stone’s throw away and it looks very much like our NY suburban neighborhood). Shopping is convenient, metro stop less than a mile away. Like the other two DC schools lots of internship possiblities - well worth a look for a safety school. For shooting for Georgetown, American is likely to be a good source of merit scholarships. They place a big emphasis on their study abroad programs.
