WashU placement Exams

Okay, I can't figure this out. I get several letters in the mail urging me to take the online WashU Calculus exams to see whether I go into Calc 3 or Calc 2. It says it is necessary. But when I go to the WashU website, I see that it says the prerequisite for Calc III at WashU is the math entrance exam OR getting a 5 on the AP.

Should I take the online exam? I've forgotten a lot of math. If i don't do that well, it might send the wrong message to WashU math people. :)

Thanks,

I'm assuming you've taken the calc AP exam? I'm pretty sure they just send the math letter to everyone... probably partly b/c the AP results might be confusing (your score on AB vs. BC, etc)
If you've taken the AP and your results are clear... like a 5 on the BC or something... there's really no reason to take Calc 2, and that's enough to place you into Calc 3. My AP scores were borderline, so I ended up retaking Calc 2, and for me it was such a waste of time, even though I thought I had forgotten a lot.

yeah... i don't want to be arrogant but I am pretty sure i got a 5. Do i need to take the online practice exam?

congrats on the 5! you're set and can just enroll in Calc3.
If you got less, but your AB subscore is a 5, they say to take the placement exam to see if Calc3 is a good idea (which it probably would if you got a 4 overall). It has the recommendations on the website, www.math.wustl.edu (under undergrad academics), if you're still unsure.

okay... thanks for the help... I really didnt' want to study math over summer break. My job is hard enough. :S

Im assuming your going to be a freshman.
Take the exam, it really doesnt mean anything to the Math Department. Really it doesnt. It just gives you a score to put you into one of the math classes. However Id suggest just waiting for your AP score to come out. When you got a 5 you do not need to take the test. You get auto enrolled into Calc III IF YOU WANT.

If you feel like your not ready, you can take Calc I or Calc II. Most people regret it because Calc II is supposedly harder thatn Calc III by a fair amount.

However there is a catch. If you get a 5 on the Calc BC exam then you can skip ot Calc III because you get credit for Calc I and II. BUT you HAVE to take Calc III in order to get the Calc I and Calc II credit. If you decide not to take Calc III, then you have NO math credits in Calc I II or III. This is similar in other AP credit transfers. READ THE FINE PRINT!

My personal suggestion is to jus review Calc I and II on your own for a semester because assuming you got a 5 and your a hard worked youll be able to review it quickly. Then youll be ready for Calc III.

Good Luck

I took AB and I'm pretty sure I got a 5 but I went ahead and took the placement test (while everything was fresh in my mind) and got placed into Calc II. So I basically took the AP test for nothing but at least I don't have to worry about anything now.

thats pretty good! :)

Actually if you get a 5 on the Calc AB test, you should be able to get auto credits for Calc I at WashU when you actually take the Calc II course directly (remember you have to take the Calc II course at WashU before you can get the AP transfer credit for Calc I) so the AP test actually can come in handy if you want. ^_^ good luck

Yeah, I know that, but I guess I'm assuming I'm going to pass Calc II at some point (hopefully first semester, haha) anyway. Is there a real advantage to getting the credit immediately as opposed to after Calc II (assuming you pass Calc II)? Thanks.

i'm sure if u get a 5 on the BC AP math exam u get credit for calc 1 and 2 only if you pass calc 3 also (when u go there of course)

I got a 5 on the BC and a 5 on the AB subscore. Am I required to take Calc III or can I just take the credits and be done with math for good?

Hopefully this will answer everyone's questions... from the math website:

BC 5- 6 units credit for Math 131-132 (Calculus I and II). Recommended placement in Math 233 (Calculus III) or 201 (Freshman Seminar: Multivariable Calculus)
BC 4- Student is probably qualified to enter Math 233 (Calculus III)
BC 3 -Student is possibly qualified to enter Math 233 (Calculus III) but Math 132 (Calculus II) might be more suitable

AB or AB subscore on BC exam
5- 3 units credit for Math 131 (Calculus I). Recommended placement in Math 132 (Calculus II)
AB 4- Student is probably qualified to enter Math 132 (Calculus II)
AB 3- Student is possibly qualified to enter Math 132 (Calculus II) but Math 131 (Calculus I) might be more suitable

No credit is awarded for AP Calculus Test scores less than 5. However any student--with any AP score or no AP score at all--can receive AP credit for the preceding course(s) in one of the calculus sequences

131-132-233 (Calculus I-II-III)
127-128 (Calculus for the Life, Managerial and Social Sciences I,II )
141-142 (Accelerated Calculus I, II for Engineers)

so, CaliJumpa, you'd automatically get credits and wouldn't have to take any more math courses.

basically if you somehow place out of math courses w/o having a 5, you take the next course, and then you receive credit for the courses you skipped.

i really hope thats the case. no more math would make me a happy man

rofl... me too. but i want to take calc 3 though. :) it seems fun and it would be a good challenge. :P I don't know about you but I love doing practice AMC, ARML, and AIME tests... only when i'm bored and my friends are out though...

Hey guys I took Calc AB my junior year and then took a calc II course at Indiana University my senior year, do i still need to take calc 3 at all? im a premed if thats any help and im planning to transfer my calc II credit

nikkosuave - Ill address your question in two parts. (FOR ARTSCI KIDS)

FIRST PART -AP TESTS

MATHEMATICS (L24) Test: MBC
The Mathematics Department gives a placement exam, available online and also during the Fall orientation period. Only an AP score of 5 receives automatic credit and placement into the calculus sequence. Meaning you either get a 5 or take placement exam.

5 6 units of credit for Math 131 and 132. You will be placed into Math 233.
*An AB Subscore of 5 will earn 3 units of credit for Math 131.
4 Take Math Placement test. You will probably be placed into Math 233.
3, 2, 1 Students with scores of less than 4 should consult with their advisors about placement based on the Math Department Placement Test, SAT scores and high school record. It will be helpful to your advisor if you bring with you the title and the author's name of the calculus book you used in high school and a photocopy of its table of contents, indicating which chapters you covered.

VERY IMPORTANT -->Any student entering the Calculus 131-132-233 sequence can receive AP credit for earlier courses in this sequence by successful completion (grade of C+ or better) of the next course in the sequence.

SECOND PART - COLLEGE CREDIT

The maximum total of transferable credits from AP and/or college courses is 15. MEANING CHOOSE CAREFULLY WHAT YOU WANT TO USE AS CREDIT!

Credit for College Work Prior to Matriculation (meaning precollege college work)

The academic policy of the College of Arts and Sciences permits the transfer of credit earned at other colleges and universities prior to graduation from high school IF:

The course is one for which credit would normally be awarded

The course was taken at a fully accredited college or university

The course was
* a bona fide college course taught on the campus of a college or university
* enrolled primarily by duly matriculated college students--i.e., high school graduates
* taught by a regular college faculty member

The course was taken after the junior year of high school.

The course is not on the high school transcript and did not count towards the high school diploma.

Please Note:
* All of the above conditions must be satisfied in order for a course to qualify for credit. If any one condition is not satisfied, Washington credit will be denied.

Documentation Required:
1. Application for "Washington University Credit for College Course Work Completed Prior to High School Graduation" ->

Course Description or syllabus for each course

I know yall aspiring students probably took a gazillion AP tests and college courses since thats the trend here at WASHU, but a note to yall. CHOOSE YOUR TRANSFER CREDITS CAREFULLY. THE BETTER YOU SCORE THE FEWER POINTS YOU HAVE.

http://artsci.wustl.edu/~college/First_Year/Placement/Advanced/

TO GET CREDIT YOU NEED TO FILL OUT FORMS TAKE PROGRESSIVE CLASSES ETC ETC SO DONT JUST SEND IN YOUR SCORES AND GO WHOOPDIDOO! YOU WONT GET THE CREDIT UNLESS APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENTS! Anyways Good Luck!
