I hate doing these things, but I really need to know if I have a shot at becoming a transfer student at WashU, as I do not want to fill out the application if I do not need to since my current college is quite difficult and I do not have much spare time.

I am a freshman at Harvard College, and as much as I hate to say this, I hate it here. I actually became depressed and suicidal during the first semester, and things aren't really looking up for my this semester. I have a 3.085 GPA, did a couple of volunteering activities, had a 4.0 in high school, and excellent high school ecs. Also, I am volunteering at a hospital in rural Afghanistan this summer.

I fluently speak Pashtu, and know some Persian and Spanish.

Finally, I am a first generation Afghan American, and am the first woman in my family to ever have attended school. My people are a minority (even here at Harvard, I am literally the only Afghani Pashtoon in the entire campus... graduate school and extension school included)

I never took the SAT, but I had a 33 on my ACT.

Thats everything I guess. Any help will be very appreciated!

The Wash U transfer acceptance rate isn’t very high. With that said, given your circumstances and background, I think you definitely have some chance.

But aren’t the real issues here why you hate it at Harvard and what would be different at WUSTL? Or put another way, is there some reason you have centered in on WUSTL as a positive change from your current situation?

Similar question. you say at harvard, your people are a minority. will that change substantially at WashU? I don’t have the answer, but you may run into that same problem at many schools.

Well, no. I mean, some are, but most seem fairly chill. Its just I’m a country girl from the midwest, and this place is literally the polar opposite. People are just colder, and its is unsettling. Also, I am going through a lot of personal issues, and not being with my family is making it that much more difficult. Tho it appears that I won’t be transferring… I just want to be happy. I don’t know what is wrong. I just don’t feel like me anymore.

Maybe you should talk to counselor or social worker at school to see if they can help you. Life is full of challenges, to a 18 or 19 years old, it is easy to get lost, but you really need to get help if you think something bothers you deeply. School usually provides such type of service to their students, so please try it to see if that helps.

Checking in with original poster. I am a mom who is very concerned about you. I was miserable my first year of college, but it got much better my second year. It can be a difficult transition. When I was at Harvard, the mental health care for students was terrible. I have an excellent therapist in Harvard Square I can refer you to, if you are interested. You need support.

There are lots of other Freshmen waking up at Harvard (and every other school) wondering how they will make it through the day but putting on a happy face to the world. Freshman Year can be incredibly lonely, especially when everyone around you seems so happy and well-adjusted. You aren’t alone! And most of the time, Sophomore Year is a lot better. You do need support, though. Try a counselor through the university or let me recommend someone to you.

Please take care of yourself and actively seek help. You don’t have to go through this alone. Write back if you want to talk more.

Sending positive and healing energy your way…

Got your message and am having trouble using the private message function to write you back. I emailed you (I think), so check your spam if you don’t see anything from me. Message me again if you get nothing. I really do want to speak with you.

I am a parent MD. I agree that you should seek a professional to talk to. You can always start with a family doctor and go from there. Your choice of schools will come easier to you once you feel better.

Can anyone help me make a decision?
I got accepted by University of Michigan and Wash U st.louis, and I have to respond to these two universities soon.
I am an electrical engineering major, and an international student. I know that Umich has a much better engineering program, and probably better reputation, but I also like the small size of Wash U. It’s hard to decide. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

You should make your own decision - that is my suggestion.
Seriously, make a list of the top important factors for you and rate them for each school. I gave each factor a weight of 1-3. Then I rated each factor using a scale of 1-3 (3 being best and 1 being worst). Total the wtg score for each school. See what you get. It will probably tell you what your decision is.
