can we bring them to beast? if so, what is a good type to buy? i've heard about G-shock and the ironman one...

New cadets could have watches last year. But you'll want to be sure. If you bring one and they're not allowed, you'll just put it in storage with your bag, civilian clothes and other disallowed stuff.

Yes, they've always allowed watches. My watch became my best friend. Even when it dies I'm going to keep it--it's been through everything with me. Just get a simple Timex. Just about everyone has the same one I do--a black Ironman.

In the Instructions for Candidates Offered Admission booklet it says "a plain wristwatch." So yea I would just go with a Timex or something cheap.

will do- thanks everyone!

Make sure your watch has an alarm on it. Depending on your company you may find your regular alarm clocks "confiscated" at the beginning of Beast--happened to our Cadet. She never saw it again.

I got my son a cheap Timex Ironman digital - with an alarm and wraparound strap - about $50. It worked fine during Beast - I keep asking him if he wants a better watch but he's quite happy with this one.

G-Shocks are very popular in the military in general because they are reliable and very tough. I'm speaking of the non solar powered/atomic clock models.

I have a few gshocks, but I usually wear a casio protrek because it has a working digital compass, barometer, altimeter. Similar to a Suunto. Not exactly a plain watch though.

Gshocks are always a good choice.

what's wrong with the atomic/ solar models, I have one...works great as long as it gets the sun, but it dies if you do not wear it for a few days

So if you have a nice watch don't wear it? I have a very nice, very tough, Luminox I like I think I'm just going to bring. Atleast I'll look good right?

wow. we didn't get watches during our new cadet training here at NMMI. Having a watch is a great relief. You go kind of crazy never knowing what time it is. That was actually the most annoying part of the new cadet crap. sigh.

Well, the atomic gshock is shiny. The shiny part scratches off after normal work related wear and tear... then the thing won't charge as well. At least that happened to mine anyway.

Mumford, My son is in his 3rd year at West Point and he has continued to wear his Luminox Navy (I know wrong service) Seal Dive Watch with no problems. His band wore out and he repaired it with 100 mph duct tape (the military version of the handyman's primary tool) until he could get a replacement. It survived Beast, Buckner, Sandhurst, and all other summer trainings. If you have one of the polished ones with the metal bracelet, it may get some wear marks.

Cheap watch you're willing to break and replace = timex.
Dependable watch you gotta fork a little $ for = Casio gshock.
Higher end watch with useful features, but breakable = Suunto.
"Navy SEAL" "Spec Ops" etc watches = (usually) crap... Can nice way for a guy to make some money by endorsing them.

yomtvraps - Perhaps you are making endorsement money from Suunto on watch sales, but I do not benefit from Luminox through endorsements. Just trying to make a statement to answer a question about a watch that has been trouble free for over 8 years and has been through rather rough treatment. The only maintenance has been battery changes and a replacement band. If that makes it a "crap" watch, then you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

The SEALS with whom I served actually did wear those Luminox dive watches. Not much better endorsement than that. 'Course, people used to tease them about "big watch, little..." Uh, never mind :)

I was referring to a Navy SEAL that throws his name on something like a watch. I don't wear suuntos unless I get one for free. The larger models are rather fragile.

Luminox actually makes ok watches. Casio gshocks are probably the most popular watch in the Army (combat arms) and for good reason.

My Luminox is pretty sturdy. I haven't thrown it off a skyscraper or anything, but its held up diving, running, every day to day activity I do without any trouble. If it breaks, it breaks, but i'm not gonna go buy a f***ing G-shock, just because my watch is too much of a sell-out poser watch or whatever according to a CC member..

...I believe it is 'Poseur,'

then again, I gave that word up when I stopped skateboarding regularly...

loose the lingo, your gonna be a cadet
