Are watches allowed during basic? If so, what brands are recommended?

i think they'll allow a simple sports watch. nothing fancy w/ too many functions and buttons.

You are not allowed a watch during basic. You will never know what time it is, except that it's time to do such-and-such.

In the instruction to appointee packet, it stated that one is allowed an inexpensive electronic watch during BCT.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong, guess we'll have to have someone answer.

Under "instructions to appointees" p.4, heading "Jewelry" - "You are allowed to bring and wear an inexpensive sports watch."

Every year is a little different, so the experience of 2010 basics may differ. However, last summer, my daughter took the aforementioned inexpensive watch to BCT, as allowed in the Appointee booklet. It was locked up during the first day, and returned on Acceptance Day.

hmmm, question is, are they letting the RTB's keep the watch through basic or taking them away the first day...I'm just curious because at the AF Summer Seminar and the AIM Coast Guard Summer Seminar a watch was extremely handy....

Regardless of what the package says, they'll take your watches. It's just standard and common opinion that part of basic is not knowing what time it is, although there are occasional clocks hanging around (for example, in the L's where many of the briefings are held.)

Not having a watch doesn't really matter though. You are never responsible for being anywhere on your own. You get pretty good at knowing the time without a watch, so you never really feel lost. We always knew when it was getting close to lunch time or time to go to bed.

Inexpensive... I wounder if that includes the watches you win in Cereal boxes...

I believe Burger King is still selling the Star Wars promotional watches for $1.99 each.

Unless it's changed, when it talks about brining an inexpensive watch to BCT, that's just to keep you on-time when you get there. For example, if you travel to the area any time in advance, you're going to need to know what time it is until you get there (i.e. tje night before/morning of) and it wouldn't make sense to penalize you just because you didn't have somewhere to drop it off at beforehand. Don't plan on knowing what time it is during BCT.

What about after BCT? My grandpa recently gave me a reallllly nice watch, but the first thing that popped into my mind was whether or not I would wear it at the academy...
