Weather: Ithaca vs. Minnesota

For those who have lived in Ithaca and Minnesota (specifically the Twin Cities), I'm wondering how the weather compares in the two places. Obviously I'm going to visit in April, but I would like to know how the winters are in Ithaca.

Is Ithaca colder than Minnesota? Does it get more snow than Minnesota?

Thanks!

Yeah, this thread is interesting. Would you say it’s harsher in Ithaca than in Minnesota? Equal? or Ithaca > Minn?

I’ve never been to Minnesota but I bet it’s worse than Ithaca. Ithaca is cold and it gets some snow, but it’s manageable.

I know a professor who is from Minnesota. She was telling me about one time when there was a -100 degree F windchill at her house. Ithaca does not get anything near that, ever. Coldest it got this semester was low single digits back in mid january, the week before the semester started. There was like a 3 or 4 day period where it never left single digits, but only dipped that low once or twice since. Coming from florida, I find the weather to be horrible (but still not as bad as I have originally expected), but should not be a big deal for a MN native.

Ithaca weather isn’t bad. Period. Anyone who thinks so is a ninny.

Having spent a significant amount of time in most places, I don’t think there’s a question that Minnesota winters are significantly harsher than Ithaca winters.

For example, I always thought it was amazing that in Minneapolis, most everyone has a block heater for their car engine. For those of you who don’t know what a block heater is, it is a device that is installed in your car that you plug in at night so that your engine doesn’t freeze, thus preventing you from starting your car in the morning. I never once in my life heard of anyone in Ithaca with a need for a block heater. Take what you will from that basic difference in lifestyle, but, for me, it was always a differentiator between the winters in Minnesota and the winters anywhere else I had ever lived.

Ithaca winters aren’t bad relative to most other places Upstate, let alone the Upper Midwest.

That said, Ithaca will be significantly warmer, slightly snowier, and slightly cloudier than the Twin Cities in the winter.

Modulation - I spent two days last October in Ithaca visiting Cornell and it wasn’t too bad by Minnesota standards. It was cold but my brother (High school freshman) was in his shorts! Other than him, we saw just one other boy in shorts. Towards the end of our tour, we entered into a conversation with him and his parents. Guess what … they were also from Minnesota. The moral of the story – no place on this planet can be as cold (and as nice) as Minnesota any day of the year. Good luck. (By the way I loved the Cornell Campus.)

Thanks, everyone! That’s very reassuring… I can’t stand winters like the harsh Minnesota ones.

haha wow just single digits for a couple days…wow

The frustrating thing about Ithaca weather isn’t the cold, its the length. Yes, it gets cold… but not unmanageably so. When it snows before spring break, it isn’t freezing, we’re just frustrated. After a while, you get used to it… definitely not unmanageable though.

Friday’s weather was gorgeous.

Today’s pretty nice too.
