I live in Hong Kong and have never visited the university. I would like to know what the weather is like in St. Louis - is it unbearably cold? Does it snow? I'm afraid I won't be able to get used to the school.

Also, my school counsellor told our class about a student from our school that transferred out of Wash U because they found it too boring. Is there much to do in the town nearby? I'm used to a bustling city in Hong Kong.

I grew up in St. Louis, and I do not think "it rains a lot" is a very good description of the weather. It isn't Seattle. In the summer, it is usually very warm, actually hot, and quite humid. Quite often (in the summer) there will be no rain for weeks at a time. Autumn is very nice. Winter is very mixed; some years there is virtually no snow, other years there will be several real snowfalls, but nothing like the Great Lakes region or New England. Winter is basically damp and cool, but many days will be warm. Spring can be wet, but is warmer and sunnier than New England. When it rains in St. Louis, it is usually a thunderstorm or heavy rain that is over rather quickly; it doesn't drizzle for days at a time like other places I have lived as an adult. Overall, I would say the weather in St. Louis is very changeable and unpredictable, but is generally not "severe"--except for the occasional tornado.

There is a lot for Wash U. students to do in the area around the university, in my opinion. A very large park, Forest Park, is nearby and contains the St. Louis Zoo, the Science Center, the Art Museum, a history museum, running trails, ice skating rink, lake and picnic areas. The zoo and museums are free. Hopefully current students will offer their opinions on the restaurants in the area and the availability of theaters, etc. I am not current on that information.

St. Louis is not a huge, busy bustling city like Hong Kong, and many of the attractions will be difficult to access if you do not have an automobile. Public transportation is better than it used to be, but is not a strong point of the city.
