Weber Honors College Class of 2020

Hey everyone, I received the early admission notification to SDSU in December and I recently applied to the honors college. Do you have any info on how selective it is? Pros and cons?

@chloehudson98 - I’m a parent of a student in the WHC. I don’t know about the selectivity, but I can say it has been a great experience for my kid. Pros: Challenging research opportunities that look terrific on his resume, great friends from his classes and Honors’ dorm, fun memories from his Honors’ dorm freshman year, study abroad opportunities, mentors, amazing professors who have continued to be available to him throughout his time at SDSU, social activities, staff that is always available for support and guidance, etc. Freshman WHC students live in Zura Hall, which just went through a $54 million renovation. It is beautiful with lots and lots of group and individual study rooms, and other amenities. Cons: Can’t think of any.

If you get accepted into the WHC, they usually host a reception for incoming students during SDSU’s Open House/Explore SDSU weekend, which is held in mid-March. At the reception, you’ll hear quite a few current students and staff speak about their experiences with WHC.

@Fish125 Thanks for the info! that’s great to hear:)

My DD got accepted – she’s happy! Does anyone know when we will find out about the scholarship?

Congrats regarding the Honors College acceptances!! Please RSVP as soon as possible to the reception. When my Aztec was a high school senior, I know several people who weren’t able to attend because they didn’t get their RSVP in soon enough. In previous years, the reception also included a program presented by the Honors College. It was absolutely fantastic. By the time we left the reception, my child decided he was going to go to SDSU (that evening he was accepted by one of the major UC schools, and it didn’t change his decision).

Bummed I can’t attend that reception, I’m 12 hours away by car. But I toured it in October and I love this school.

I was notified of acceptance by email yesterday.

@Fish125, is your child still happy with their decision? What is their major?

SDSU was lower on my son’s list prior to receiving the honors college invite, but he is warming up to the idea. His major is Mechanical Engineering. So far, he is deciding between SDSU, UCR and CPP, although he is still waiting to hear from SLO and other UC’s.

@sddanr Most definitely. His dedication to his school seems to get stronger each semester. For him it has been a wonderful experience. I’ll private message you with specifics, but he is a STEM major, and is on track to graduate in four years. SDSU was probably the lowest school on his list when he sent in his applications. He was accepted by all the UCs in which he applied, and he was waitlisted by Harvey Mudd, but after the Honors reception he asked to be removed from their waitlist. Senior year in high school was so stressful with the application process, life, and school that it was easy to get caught up in the prestige of some of the universities. But, the more he visited SDSU and really researched it, as well as talked with professors, staff, and students, well…the university kept rising to the top of his list.

@Fish125 I’m definitely dealing with that stress right now too! It makes me really think about choosing a school that is overall less competitive but still be challenged in an honors program or something similar, especially since I have stressed myself out so much since sophomore year that it has taken a serious toll on my health. I also got into Universtiy of Hawaii at Manoa’s honors college so that’s an option for me too. Even though I got accepted to u of Miami (and waiting to hear back from UCs and USC) I’ll probably choose somewhere less prestigious so I can do honors, have a higher GPA, and won’t get caught up in excessive competition and sacrifice wellbeing for a degree. I have a friend at Berkeley who was a valedictorian, took nearly all AP classes every year in HS. I visited her over the weekend and she said its nearly impossible to get good grades even in her general eds! All her courses are in giant lecture halls and she hardly has any free time.

@chloehudson98 My kids all had to take a step back senior year to breathe because at times the whole process of juggling applications, school, life, and extracurrculars was like being on a wild roller coaster, but after the acceptance deadlines, everyone started to breathe normally again because they were content with their choices. I can truly say that I feel my Honors College Aztec has gotten a comparable education as my children who attend high tier UCs, but, at least in our family’s case, my SDSU kid’s peers seem much more supportive of one another than I’ve seen at other places. Also, as a parent, I much prefer seeing my kids in a semester-system university rather than the quarter-system. I think for my Aztec, the semester-system gives him enough time to study hard, and still be very involved on campus without adding way too much stress.

Hello, can anyone tell me the usual awarded amounts for the Weber Honors’ Scholarships?

Hi My daughter missed the early deadline 1/15 for applying for the WHC but i did notice she can still apply? What do do you think her chances are since she didn’t apply early Also during our tour the gal did the video presentation mentioned if you do not get into WHC there is a chance your going to be in a class of 60 or possibly up to 500 students!!! Is that correct? Is it any additional money to be in the WHC? thanks

@phallen if your daughter can still apply, have her do so. If accepted to WHC, students only have to take 16 units within the honors college. All other courses they take with the rest of the students, including the high-volume courses. My understanding is that approximately 1500 applied for 300 spots in the WHC.

Does anyone of more information on the likely hood of getting accepted into WHC if you were to apply after the initial deadline? I applied in February after I got my admission letter and wanted to know if it is even possible for me to get in.
