How are they in colleges compared to a normal private gym club?

There are two places to lift at my school. One is always packed full (much more so than a normal gym), and another is usually quiet except during peak hours. The equipment isn’t the newest, but the motions are still the same. It is kept pretty clean.

Do most school gyms have a decent to large selection of free weights?

My main school gym has dumbbells from 5 to 100 with about 3 sets for each weight. A couple power racks/barbells. Random barbells to use standing up. Crapload of cardio equipment. Lots of machines. Only 6 adjustable benches tho ><

Most college gyms are the same. And college gyms look better than normal gyms. They have the same weightlifting equipment.

Things college gyms may have:
Basketball courts,
Indoor track,
Handball rooms,
Weight room,
Cardio rooms,
Climbing wall,
Badminton,
Table Tennis,
Saunas,
Cafe,
Gym Store,
Locker Rooms,
Heated pool,
& more.

My new school has a pretty crappy gym, but they have two facilities with one in the downtown area since there are “two campuses”.

Purdue had a huge gym. Alot of recreational gyms, bball courts, badminton courts, indoor track that was over the basketball court, handball rooms, racquetball rooms, table tennis rooms, hot tub, saunas, dive pool, olympic sized swimming pool, a lot of treadmills, weight machines, dbells, crew machines, bicycles, outdoor tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts. They are actually going to renovate it in the a few years since their funding from the state was just approved.

It depends on the specific school, but here in the NE there seems to be a trend of building or renovating athletic/fitness facilities to entice new students. The result is a country club spa breaking out on just about every campus. If there is not a new facility, there is probably one in the planning stage.

My school just upgraded all of the machines in one room. There are two areas for lifting, one is more for fitness, the other more geared getting bigger/stronger. As you can tell one area is filled with guys while the other has more mix of people. But I would say that my school’s gym is very nice!

we have a lot of gyms with good weight rooms at my school.

all you need is a bench, a rack, and a bar anyway

the hard part is staying motivated. i lifted a lot in high school, but it gets tough in college to keep a routine.

Motivation is easy. I have tendonitis in my shoulder right now and it’s very hard to keep myself out of the gym. I was training through pain for months because I couldn’t stay away, but it’s been getting worse, so I’m forcing myself to rest.

****ing low bar squats messed up my shoulder

College gyms are great if your schedule accomodates off-peak hours. January is terrible because of all the New Year resolutions, but four or five weeks later it’s back to normal.

the college gym here is easily twice as good as anything comparable to in the city

I completely agree with january being the worst.
