Thank you for your thoughtful response. I appreciate the input. He’s also very interested in the Bandier Program at Syracuse and is appling to Skidmore, American’s Music and Business program, Univ of Ga, Univ of Miami and Fordham…sevral others. Great to hear you nephew was also at Starland. Not easy to perform there and the owner is widely known…will be a plus…

Again, good luck to your son.

I have researched schools that offer programs in recording arts, music tech, etc. for the past two years for my nephew. I was not aware of any such programs at Fordham or U of GA or Skidmore. I do see that Skidmore offers courses in it but a degree program with that concentration.

Skidmore is an excellent Music school with a business program. I spoke with them earlier this year and they can create a joint program combining business and music. Georgia just started a joint program within their School of Business. Its headed by a music industry executive. They are looking to build a Clive David type of program…it has funding and University leadership support. Also, U of Ga is in Athens…home of Southern Rock and a hot spot for music. I forgot to mention he’s also applying to Ithaca…here again a joint Business-Music program would be developed for him.

I know at Skidmore you can combine music and business. I was just saying they don’t have a Music Tech or Recording Arts Major.

Fordham doesn’t either than I know of?

I definitely know about Ithaca’s program.

Wasn’t aware of a new program at U of Georgia but for now, could not find this listed a a major. Thanks for explaining.

Also Music Business or Music Industry is not the same major as Recording Arts / Music Technology / Studio Production, etc. Perhaps your son is interested in either. I have just looked into recording arts, not music business, given my nephew’s interest and so that may explain it.

There are several other programs you may want to look into for your nephew that focus on recording arts/production. When my son was looking at programs he considered both production and the business end of the industry. Universities that have recoring programs incklude Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, University of Hartford. There are some specialized programs at Berklee College of Music amd a joint program at Case Western Reserve with the Cleveland Institute of Music. Connecticut College also offers a recording technology program. We also loked at Rensselaer Polytech.
Best of Luck

I have thoroughly researched it, thanks. Past the point of selecting programs. Trying to finish the apps.

Oy, reading this board is seriously depressing me! I’m a strong candidate academically, but I’m really worried about the audition! Tisch is my only audition school (I’m not applying to any other BFAs, they’re all BAs), and I’m really worried. Gah I hope I do well! Any pointers?

I think we all get nervous reading these posts! But they are filled with terrific advice on what to wear, what to sing, what not to sing, etc. It just takes hours and hours to wade through it all. Keep reading! What has helped me feel slightly less nervous for my daughter is going on Youtube, and looking up freshmen showcases at the various MT schools. I can usually picture my D in their company, looking and sounding like she belongs there. Now some have been at their respective colleges for 2 semesters I think, by the time of the showcases, so they have had some great training since they’ve been out of high school and are at least two years older than my girl, but still, it helped me to see that my kid is in the ballpark of what I was viewing. Then I think she has a chance.
Since you only have the one audition, make sure you practice your material as if you were doing an audition at every opportunity for every artsy person you can make listen to you. If there was one other audition school that you didn’t care about so much, that would be great to do before NYU. If not or even if so, do as many “auditions” for your friends and family and total strangers that you can manage.

yeah, I’m trying to do that. I’m already applying to 10 schools, though, I really don’t feel like adding an 11th, you know? Thank you for the advice! :D
