Alright guys I've been thinking about GPA, so I'm trying to figure out exactly what colleges take..

I go to a gifted school that is top 10 in the nation and is extremely rigourous.
Freshman Year I had about a 2.8 uw, which translated into a 3.33 weighted
Sophomore Year I had a 3.33 uw, which translated to around a 4.1 weighted I believe.

Junior Year I'm going to strive extremely hard to get around a 3.7 UW, which would translate to like a 4.35 weighted.

So basically I'm just wondering how that will translate onto college because I'm worrying about low GPA.

Depending on where you attend high school, you are right -- you should be worried about a low GPA.

Because schools vary so widely on how grades are given, colleges tend to look at the unweighted GPA and the class rank.

If you have a lower GPA -- yet are still ranked highly in the class, you should be fine. If you have a lower GPA and a lower rank, it will be an issue.

Well our school doesn't have ranks because everyone is "gifted", but I wouldn't go as far as saying I have a low GPA compared to most kids.

A 4.0 is very rare to comeby at my school, I'd say most are in low 3s.

I feel like colleges may take GPA from my school a little more lightly because I've heard of alot of kids getting into solid colleges with what most would consider a "low GPA"

dpc -- there are schools out there (yours may be one) where kids with GPAs in the 3.5 range who are still competitive for top schools.

this is where CC can't really help you and you need to talk with your school's guidance counselor. Many schools subscribe to a service called Naviance -- you can look at college admissions over the past several years and see exactly what kind of GPA and test scores kids had that were successful at getting into a particular school.

GPA is always evaluated in context. If you attend a top ten US high school there is no doubt that every top college knows the range of grades that make a competitive applicant from your school. You are at an extreme advantage - it is more difficult for a college to be impressed with a 4 from a random P.S. than a high 3 from a magnet school.

Colleges, especially selective ones, consider unweighted ONLY. This is because they look at the courses you have taken and your school's profile. They will weight your GPA themselves.

Exactly, they look at it in context. I went to Princeton U for spring break (went to visit my friend's brother w/my friend as well as to take a look at the campus) and he got in with a 3.5 GPA in a highly ranked high school.
