Weird SAT scores

My SAT score do not reflect my strengths. I got 800 on reading and 800 on writing, yet I messed up on math. I consider myself a math person. So this is odd.
I would like to major in something math/science-y... but if my lowest score is math, will colleges admissions people laugh at me?
"Oh haha look at this girl who messed up on math and wants to be an engineer," you know?
Oh yes, and I am only a junior, so would it be wise to retake for perfect on all three? I would like to do that but the SAT is really expensive so if college admissions won't care too much, I'd rather not.

Any advice? Thanks:)

Also, my math score isn't excruciatingly terrible, but it is moderately embarrassing and I would not like to share it:(

I am not planning on going into math or science, but our SAT scores sound very similar (I got 800CR, 800W, and 680M). And, while I’m not over the moon about my Math score…I’m okay with it. When I looked over my score report, I saw that I missed a lot of points for guessing incorrectly. In the end, scores are just numbers, after all.

I would say, if you are planning on majoring in math or science, shoot for at least a 650ish on Math. It can’t hurt to retake the test one more time, but if money is a concern and you’re already somewhere around that range, that’s fine. And either way–having a perfect verbal section is impressive. You should be proud of yourself for achieving that!

Best of luck :)

If you honestly think you can get an 800 Math, then by all means retake. Even if you don’t get an 800 in CR and W on your second try, remember that many top schools these days superscore. I’m in the same boat as you are - I want to major in the humanities in college and go on to law school, yet have a 700 CR with an 800 M and a 790 W.

if your lowest score is somewhere in the 700s…i wouldn’t worry about it. even if it’s in the 600s i wouldn’t be embarrassed. i hope u didn’t get lower, or else this post might be considered mildly offensive -_-

have you considered taking SATII Math? If you’re better at precalc than the sometimes weird geom/alg whatever problems on SAT I you may do better. It’s much easier to get 800 on SATII than SATI.

Could you actually share your math score? Your idea of excruciatingly terrible might be different than other people’s, so it might be easier to make a call on whether or not it’ll be a big deal to admissions people, whether you should take it again to see if you can ace it for kicks, etc.

Also what type of schools are you thinking about applying to/have you applied to (if you did)? Cause some schools would make a bigger deal out of it than others, some schools are sat optional (though I wouldnt opt out with two 800s), etc.

About the suggestion to retake the SAT: I may do that next fall.

About my SAT math…

I got the medium and hard math questions right, so I must know something… haha though I just couldn’t get all of the ‘easy’ type. It’s sad. Or that may have been the PSAT? Anyhow…

Oh, and I got a 5 on the Calc AB AP exam last year, so maybe that will cancel out my imperfect SAT math? I doubt it- considering the importance of SATs. But maybe! Could that work out somehow, do you think?

Also, I don’t want to give away my SAT scores completely because of keeping my identity a secret and all that fun stuff:)

Thanks all for your suggestions!! I appreciate it:)

You’re worried that we’ll figure out who you are based on your SAT scores? I have an 800w, 800r, and 710m. Come find me.

Anyways, if you look at my scores, you might understand why I’m posting here. I intend to major in Mechanical Engineering, even though math is apparently my weakest subject. I got into my top choice school with no issues, and I’m not too concerned about handling the material. I actually considered it a good sign- I always do best where I feel challenged, not where I’m bored stiff. Your AP score is a bonus, but if you’re truly unhappy with your math scores, the previous suggestions regarding the SAT II are great advice. Either way, I’m sure you will be fine. :)

You got an 800 on the other two sections. If you can get a solid 700+ on math and assuming you have good grades and a good course load, you will be able to get into many great colleges. I really benefitted from doing a lot of practice SAT problems because especially in math, there are a set of the same kinds of problems that are used over and over and if you can recognize them, then you’ll improve a lot.

Gofygure- that makes me happy! thanks for sharing.
collegehappy- okay, so my grades are perfect so far and my APs are all perfect so far… and because of that, something in the 700s is okay on math? if you are right that’s good for me. I hope you are right!

If your score is in the 700s then don’t worry about it. Seriously. It’s fine :)
